In 1876, Butte Silver Bow was established as a mining town. From its beginning, Butte Silver Bow was known for its firearms and ammunition production. In 1892, the town was renamed after Major General George Armstrong Custer. The name change reflected the fact that Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show had taken place in Butte at that time. Finally, in 1957, Butte Silver Bow was dissolved and its residents were re-organized into five townships within Montana: Anaconda, Arlington, Deer Lodge, Glendora and Hereford. The first firearm hat company in Butte Silver Bow was erected by John Moulder in 1876. It produced hats made from buffalo horn and other natural materials used to make guns at the time. At first only men could own firearms; later women became involved in the industry as well. Over time however, the company shifted focus towards producing firearms Hats for women customers. In 1893 but it not until 1898 that an arms manufacturer opened up shop on Main Street named Great Western Armory (GWA). This firm manufactured pistols and rifles both civilian and military grade with a wide variety of firearms designs available including Colt 1911 handguns/rifles as well as Winchester Model 1897 shotguns. The GWA also assembled rifles for customers who bought them pre-assembled from local dealers or builders utilizing Bolt Action Repeater rifle models which were becoming increasingly popular among ranchers during this period due to their accuracy and firepower ability combined with their easy disassembly/repairability
