Billings, Montana is a small city in the U.S. state of Montana. It is the county seat of Butte County and lies on the Missoula River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 6,959. The town was founded in 1892 by John Billings and named for him. In 1907, it became an incorporated municipality and became part of Butte County when it was organized in 1912. The town has experienced several waves of population growth over the years, most notably during World War II when it reached its peak population with over 30,000 people. Since then, however, it has been steadily losing residents to other larger cities in Montana and elsewhere.

Billings was first settled by the Crow Indians in 1825. The original town was located on the banks of the Yellowstone River and consisted of a few homes and a trading post. It grew rapidly, however, as men and women from surrounding communities came to trade with the Crow and create a town that would be known today for its mining industry. The first store in Billings opened in 1828. In 1851, the city was founded when settlers bought land along the Missouri River from the Crow. The city flourished until 1893, when an economic depression caused many mines to close and lead to a decline in population. However, during the 1990s and 2000s, Billings began to prosper as it became known for its tourist attractions such as its art galleries, museums, and brewery.
In 1892, the U.S. Post Office was established in Billings by order of President Benjamin Harrison. The town was named for General James H. Billings, a hero of the Mexican-American War and Civil War who had retired to Montana on a farm near present day Billings. In 1907, the first post office building was built in the town, and it remained in use until 1974 when it burned down. The town has since been rebuilt with a new post office and civic center which opened in 2006.
