Billings, Montana is a town in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of MT County. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Butte County to the south and east, Greeley County to the north, and Sheridan County to the west. The territory that became Billings was part of what was called "Great Bighorn" region of western Montana before it was organized as a county in 1881. The first white people to arrive in this area were fur trappers named John Dalland and his party in 1819-20. Dalland's party camped on an Indian country where he killed two grizzly bears for food. He also found some small hills which he named Rocky Mountains because they resembled those near his home colony at Fort Bridger on the Columbia River in Oregon Territory (now Washington). One year later, James Naismith discovered gold near present day Billings while prospecting for silver around 15 miles southeast of town on Hwy 82. This discovery led to overpopulation and land issues within what would become MT County until 1897 when mining operations stopped due to harsh geography and changing demographics; however, many old mining sites still remain today including some associated with early mineral processing metallurgy such as smelting lead ore from spruce trees near Anaconda Lake below modern day Billings In 1881, Butte County formed from parts of MT and SI Counties following a request by District Commissioner George Armstrong Howe (1847-1920) who felt that Calhoun Township should be included within Butte because it had long been considered part of Cache Valley Calhoun Township had been established as an agricultural village about four miles northeast ofmodern day Billings in 1861 by cattlemen W M Callahan (1830-1906), J F McClure (1850-1914), T G Neumann (1856-1937), Chas Soper (1863-1945) and Ira Clementson (1868-1959). Callahan purchased 640 acres northwest of modern day Billing from David Noble for $4 per acre plus interest which he sold at public auction in 1875 In 1865, J F McClure married Sarah Jane Bennett who also lived thereabouts but left after one year when her husband got a promotion at Fort Laramie In 1870s several stores were opened up along US 80 between Cache Valley Center east pastpresent day Helena then down past present day Missoula into Whatcom County; these include Store #2 operated by P G Simons next door to Store #1 across US 80 just south of Big Hole Creek Bridge They served mainly miners travelling through cache valley looking for gold nuggets although occasional travelers bought groceries or newspapers at these stores By 1880 storekeepers accounted for 27%+of all business downtown; this percentage increased to 50% during World War I when goods shipping began carrying passengers throughCache Valley center onto trains heading out West . Thereafter most businesses closed except for two general stores managed by brothers Samuel Lewis & Josiah Lewis which continued open until 1951 . These stores are now preserved as Pioneer Hardware Museum & Heritage Center located adjacenttothe original store building on senior avenue billings blvd During World War I local merchant Lillian Snowden ran a general store across US 160 from Big Hole Creek Bridge east into Whatcom Co., selling items like candy bars, cigarettes etc.; she also raised chickens inside her house.. After hostilities ended local farmers resumed crops Production increased rapidly due to new irrigation methods arriving via wagon train arriving here circa 1890 reaching grades 3’7” wide x 2” deep ditches having available water tables beyond 45 degrees longitude Lottery tickets were invented here about 1895 starting with 10¢ stamps similar design played with both hands drawing 1/2¢ lotteries continuing until 1934
Billings was founded in 1883 by James W. Billings, a banker and rancher. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its history, and by 1907 it had over 100 residents. In 1916, the city's first school was built, and in 1918 the first hospital opened. During World War II, Billings became one of the most important Battlefields in Montana because of its strategic location on the Missouri River between Great Falls and Helena. After the war ended, the city experienced rapid growth as businesses moved into downtown from outlying areas. By 1970, Billings had more than 1,000 residents and was home to two hospitals and several schools. However, an economic recession in the mid-1990s caused significant decline in overall employment levels and population growth throughout much of downtown; however, a recent resurgence has brought new development to portions of downtown including a new shopping district called "The Hill."
