The first post office was established in downtown Billings on December 15, 1875 by A.P Hanna with mail service from Bozeman only going through Paxson until 1898 due to postal regulations then in place preventing transportation between eastern Montana and western Wyoming outside of Great Falls (then part of Wyoming). In 1909, much progress was made with construction of two miles (3 km) long Bridge Street connecting downtown withBozeman across Bullhead Creek; this opened up much business activity including meat packing plants along both sides of Bridge Street while also providing an excellent view into downtown from upper floors or balconies overlooking Bullhead Creek below On November 2nd 1912, Elisha White organized what would become known as Big Hole Mining Company Limited Partnership with Jens Christensen as its president and treasurer They began operations extracting gold from several mines east outcroppings near present day Ruby but soon found additional deposits west within about one mile (1 km) north of their original location . After various refinements were made they reached an agreement March 3rd 1916 with Harry Hutton who had leased them from Gold Rush Syndicate & Consolidated Mines Incorporated whereby they amalgamated into Hutton-White Mines Limited Partnership which continued operations until 1951
