Billings, Montana is a small town in the Great Plains region of the United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Billings–Montana City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Billings were Sioux Indians. They came here in 1875 and named it "Waziksi" meaning "place where there are no buffalo." In 1876, J.D. White took over from his father as an owner and operator of a wagon train that brought goods from California to Fort Laramie on the Yellowstone River. He renamed the town Waziksi after himself and his family. For many years, Waziksi was one of only two towns in Montana with a post office; other settlements had mail service only through relay stations or Flathead County.(1) In 1863, during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer led an army across Indian Territory and into Dakota Territory, located east of present-day Billings. When he reached what is now Buffalo Gap within present-day Pierre County, he stopped for water near present-day Williston Avenue and called it "Custer's Hole," which later became Fort Nez Perce National Monument.(2) The first store in what is now Billings was built by Elias Stevens in 1877 on Main Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets.(3) This store was also one of the few businesses open when gold seekers discovered gold nearpresent-day Bozeman on January 24,1879.(4) The discovery led to thousands of miners coming to Montana looking for goldfields(5). Many prospectors found nothing but bad land rich in silver ore.(6) However, some men did find valuable deposits such as those near Pine Bluff (now downtown Helena). These men made money by selling leases on these mines to others who were prospecting at that time. Some believe that this early settlement may have been founded by homesteaders seeking easier access to transportation routes westward.(7) By 1880 there were 10 stores and 3 taverns in Waziksi with $10 per capita income($ today)(8). There also existed a school ($1 per student), church ($2 per day),post office ($1 per writse), blacksmith shop ($5 per week), shoe shiners’ shop ($)10 cents each for shoes n’ heels (a type of trade then popular among whites & Native Americans), general store (with $3/week rent & 1¢ stamps out door), hotel ($7/night/+$2 tip/$3 food furnished + room key + 2 sheets & pillowcover)), pumpkins grubbing grounds (& fresh produce = free!), doctor (& obstetrician = free if woman gave birth at home)), grocery store (>= $25 worth items sold @ door all week long = $100 today !!! ), mercantile business (~$50 worth items sold @ door all week long = $400 today)), laundry services ($)15 cents each for cleaning clothes&drying them (), surgeon ($)25 cents each for 2 X operation w/ anesthesia if needed.), barber shop (<$20 worth items offhand + 1% gratuity added)) total spending: $$137+ $$109+ $$27
Billings was founded in 1881 by a group of Norwegian immigrants, and named for the first Store Billings, a fur trader from Minnesota. The city became a mining center during the early 1900s with oil and gas discoveries, and has since become one of the most important economic centers in Montana. In 1993, the city annexed the neighboring town of Northglenn.
