The first bullets were created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1869 while he was working as an instructor at Fort Laramie. Lead bullet rounds were developed by Alexander Dumas in 1892 for use with cannons on the battlefield. Lead bullet rounds became popular because they could penetrate armor much easier than other types of ammunition, which made them more effective against military targets. In 1916, a new type of ammunition called “tape” ammo was developed by John Melson in response to World War I efforts to improve artillery fire accuracy. Tape rounds had a thinned out center core that allowed them to fly further and penetrating farther into enemy fortifications Than any other type of ammunition at the time. During World War II, paper clip ammo became popular due to its low recoil and fast projectile speed. Paperclip ammo was used extensively during the war for target shooting, infantry fighting vehicles, air defense barrages, and artillery fire support missions. It is part of the Great Falls, Montana Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore and settle this area were Emigrant Trails Company employees on their way to Fort Bridger in 1863 when they found waterholes and some land that would eventually become Billings. In 1868 two groups of men from Great Falls explored this area before returning home; one group led by George Haggerty found telluric coal seams while another group led by David Wickenheiser camped near present-day Gate City before departing again for Great Falls on July 10, 1868. In 1871 Chauncy Lewis discovered gold in what would become Billings while prospecting for silvernearpresent-day Jerome; he named it after his friend and mentor Samuel Mifflin who had been instrumental in helping him find these deposits. In 1870–71, Major John Dickson surveyor overran much of present-day MT County for US Cavalry under General Nelson Acheson during the Wyoming War; he chose present-day Billings as his permanent headquarters because its location offered easy access to supplies needed for cavalry operations overland and its neutrality allowed him to avoid any conflict with either side." For many years until well into World War II, Billings was an important supply depot for military forces traveling through MT County on their way northward or southward across Canada or Mexico. During those times entire weeks long periods ofArmyandNavy transport landinginbillingswouldboomuponthebayouduringthe1930sand40s due toproducelargequantitiesoftobombsinthesouthwestcoastofMTCountyiscurrentlyunderminingforcoalandgold." Today's economy relies heavily upon services such as health care, education, banking and manufacturing which have grown up around downtown Billings since its establishment as a town in 1906: "DowntownBillingstonshapingasoneofamerica'slargestdowntowncentersattractsandprofessionallabormarketsinsupermarketconditions," notes urban planner Don Freeman with fingers crossed that recent additions like Park University make possible more sustainable growth patterns downrange (see also Downtown Development Authority). Today, much of what makes Billings so unique is its history as a stop on various railroads throughout its long history as well as its current role as an important center for trade and commerce within McNary County. Many historic buildings still stand among today’s businesses including the former Steel City Savings Bank which was founded in 1898 and remains one of the oldest bank buildings west of Kansas City; First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) which was chartered here in 1903; and H&R Block which was founded here by Homer Hinebaugh in 1921.
