West Plains is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO-Jefferson City, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now West Plains dates back to 1819 when three men from Kentucky named Covington and Henderson emigrated to this area and established a farmstead. In 1834, John Wesley Hardin purchased the farmstead from John Wiegand and changed its name to West Plains after his home state of Illinois. In 1838, William Fenton donated land to the town for a public square which remains today as the heart of West Plains. In 1865, Captain James Hogue organized a troop of cavalry called "The Blackhawks" and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. After discharge he reopened an accountancy office in West Plains with his brother-in-law Reuben Parsons. With World War I starting on April 6th 1917 and troops mobilization being ordered by President Woodrow Wilson, Captains Hogue and Parsons decided to open up their business again immediately upon returning from war service rather than wait for orders from higherups. This decision led to them being rewarded with promotion within their company for their patriotism during wartime times! When World War II started on September 2nd 1939, most people in America were still living in ignorance about what was happening abroad while others were busy working themselves into shape preparing for war by doing whatever they could do without getting too involved; that is until Radio Corporation Of America (RCA) made history by broadcasting news bulletins around the clock letting everyone know about Nazi Germany’s aggression against Europe via shortwave radio!
