Some of these men include George Washington Morrison, Benjamin Rush Wilcox, and Elijah Clarke Randolph. In 1853, Morrison erected the first telescope in Missouri when he built an 8-foot refractor based on his experience dating back to 1827 with a classical mirror design. This telescope was later replaced by another 2-foot model which was used by Drs JH Huggins and WM Bolton during 1862-1863 aboard USS Constitution while conducting surveys off California’s coast. Later that same year, Randolph erected a 3-foot Newtonian Telescope atop an old mill building located just east of town on US Highway 61 (later renamed US Highway 24). This instrument remained operational until 1915 when it was dismantled due to its age and poor condition. Despite these early successes, it wasn’t until 1865 that a truly successful attempt was made at creating a large telescope inside Missouri using freehand drawings from sketches provided by friends William Bolton and Drs JH Huggins along with help from Amos Hale (a local surveyor). This project became known as “The Great Comet Experiment” after its release across numerous newspapers across America during July 1865.. The creation of this instrument marked a significant milestone not only for astronomical research but also for satellite technology which would be developed subsequent years. West Plains is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 816 at the 2010 census. The name of the town was given to it by General James Wilkinson after his victory at Wyandotte Creek in 1813. The area that now West Plains was first occupied by the Kickapoos tribe. The first white settler in this area was John Halsey who arrived in 1819. He built a cabin on what is now known as Halsey's Hill and named it West Plains after himself and his home county, Kansas. In 1830, Elijah White moved to what is now West Plains from Stilwellsville and founded the first post office there. In 1835, the Platte River ran through this area and created an opening for wagon traffic between Independence, Missouri (then part of Iowa) and Kansa City, Kansas (then part of Nebraska). This created a demand for goods brought overland from those two locations and led to the development of businesses along this route such as Donelson & Sanders Auctioneers which still operates today out of its old building at 7th Street and Broadway near High School. In 1840-41, James Wilkinson fought against Native Americans at Wyandotte Creek during the Famine in central Missouri. After his victory, he named this section of Buchanan County "Wilkinson's Valley" in honor of him. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, many Japanese residents decided to move away from Pearl Harbor because they were afraid they would be interned there if they returned to Japan after the war ended propertied individuals could do so but members of minority groups like Koreans were not allowed to return until 1947 which also caused many Japanese people residing in these areas to leave too or face discrimination when seeking re-entry into society once again following World War II regardless of their legal rights under American law which continued until 1965 when President Lyndon B Johnson signalled US policy change allowing citizens from certain countries unrestricted access back into America once their visas had been processed however most Koreans living within easy driving distance did not take advantage of this offer since they felt cultural isolationism towards them by American society continuing even after World War II ended . In 1951–1952 plans were hatched for west PLAINS high school located on present day west PIERCE road acrossstate line east off I-44 just south off MO-Highway 362
