West Plains is a small town in southern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) south of St. Louis and is part of the Springfield–Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now West Plains were James Kinsman and his family who arrived in 1820 from Kentucky. They built a log cabin on the east side of the river near present-day Rockville Centre. A post office was established at West Plains in 1832, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1837, John Cook patented what would become known as the "Cook Landing" tract of land which extended along both banks of the river to where it intersects with present-day Deer Park Road. This area became known as Cook's Landing because Captain Samuel Hays had founded Hays County west of Baghdad, Iraq (now Baghdad), in 1796 and named his new county after himself. The first store opened here on July 16, 1837 by Wm Fenton with provisions for eight months supply for his cattle The western townsite developed around this early pioneer settlement which included what are now Brushy Creek and Old Courthouse Roads; some early homes still stand today including: Kinsman's Cabin (now Brushy Creek State Park), Mr. & Mrs.'s House #2 (now Old Courthouse Road), Pioneer Home No 12 (now Brushy Creek State Park), Mrs Rector's place (west side of current day Deer Park Rd.), Elisha Shields' place(east side of current day Deer Park Rd.), Anthony Watson's house(north side of present day Deerpark Rd.), Jno Cook's farmstead(south side of present day Deerpark Rd.) A school was also established soon after this initial pioneer settler influx but it burned down within six months due to weather conditions that prevailed during that time period including severe thunderstorms that pounded much of central Missouri every month or so during those years

West Plains is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1837 by George Stephenson and named for him because of the high ground to the west of it which he had purchased from the French in 1803. The first post office was established in West Plains on October 15, 1837. In 1840, David Forney built a gristmill on the east side of town. By 1850, there were six stores and twenty-four homes in West Plains. A school was founded in 1853 and enlarged in 1865; it later became known as Central High School. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln visited West Plains while campaigning for reelection and stopped at the mill on his way to Cairo Junction. After his visit, business began to revive thanks to increasing demand from travelers along Route 66 who used that route to reach Springfield from Illinois. The community developed rapidly with new houses being built everywhere except around the old mill where many remain today as well as a few buildings remaining from when Fort Sumter was besieged during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1899, construction began on what would become Central Methodist Church – one of three churches built that year across America's Union Pacific Railroad network within five years of each other (the others being Westminster Presbyterian Church in San Francisco and Christ Episcopal Cathedral in New York City). That same year saw also an addition to West Plains' citizenry - Alma Ladd – wife of banker William Ladd Jr., who had bought land adjacent to East Main Street for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ present day) after seeing an advertisement placed by local farmer John Doan which called for settlers willing to build "a little village upon this beautiful piece of country." Alma soon organized a Committee for Promoting Village Development which contributed money towards purchasing land totaling nearly . Upon her death two years later without children living near her para married into one such family - setting off yet more settlement activity within minutes ol her death! A post office has been established at West Plains since October 15th 1837 but closed July 9th 1870 due too high postage rates caused by additions made during wartime with no decrease back then like now
West Plains was a small town in Missouri that was founded in 1836. The town was located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 12 miles north of St. Louis. West Plains had a population of about 100 people when it was founded. It grew to about 300 people by 1840, and to about 500 people by 1858. The town went out of business in 1872.
