West Plains, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Jefferson County metropolitan area and is adjacent to St. Joseph, MO. The West Plains community began as a small cluster of farmers on the eastern edge of what is now Springfield,MO. In 1839, Ebenezer Price donated land to make up for an error in his map which had incorrectly places Springfield east of West Plains. The first settler in West Plains was John Brown who came from Maryland in 1847 and started the first store in West Plains. In 1870, Jens Rasmussen founded the first post office in West Plains and it was later renamed after him as Rasmussen Post Office. According to the United States Census Bureau, West Plains has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1]of 2010, there were 5,693 people living in town: 2% African American; 98% White; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%, up from 1%. As one might expect given its location within Columbia County (home to St Louis), some cultural diversity exists here too - including 30 different languages spoken by residents according to 2000 U.S Census data (up from 14 just five years earlier). This does not seem likely due largely to commuting distance rather than language barriers though there are several restaurants/cafes with multiple languages that serve local cuisine that do exist nearby - most notably Chinese restaurant Beijing Garden & Cantonese Cafe on US Highway 60 outside town limits just off I-70 exit 217a southbound drive into Clarksville while Vietnamese restaurant Dong Ngo offers international cuisine along with English menus throughout much of its 10-acre main dining room complex across I-70 exit 219A northbound drive into Jefferson City proper).

West Plains, Missouri was founded by the wagon train on July 10, 1854. The town was named for the Plains of Abraham, in present-day Kansas. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. By 1875, West Plains had become a city with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1916, West Plains became the capital of the new state of Arkansas. The city experienced significant growth during the years following World War II as businesses moved to the area and residents began to commute to major cities in order to find work. However, by 1992, West Plains had shrunk back to its original size and stopped growing altogether. Today, much of what once made West Plains an important center for commerce and culture is gone - but its legacy remains as one of the most important towns in west Arkansas.
