The first permanent settler in West Plains was Nicholas Willigs in 1838. A post office called West Plains was established in 1846, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1886. The Musselshell River formed the west side of town and flowed along what is now State Highway 54 before turning south to join the Arkansas River near present-day Osage Heights. At its confluence with the river, west of present day St.' Genevieve Avenue and east of Boulevard Avenue, west plains began; this name probably derived from "west bank" because alluvial soil lay on both banks of the river for many miles around. In 1870 local entrepreneur W C Pritchard donated land to build a small village on his farmstead about two miles northwest of where West Plains now stands. Named after him, Pritchardville became an important commercial center for much of eastern St Francois County during this time period due to its location close to water supplies and transportation links. In 1881 Pritchardville had a population of eighty-three residents; by 1920 it had shrunk to six residents due largely to a lack of business opportunities following development along I-435 northward into neighboring townships (now Platte County). This decline did not stop however as by 1930 Pritchardville had grown again to ninety-six residents when it joined with other nearby villages including Doniphan (founded 1907) and White Sands (1892). With continued growth came increased pollution which led to several major fires throughout World War II necessitating evacuation plans for bothvillages combined which saw over one hundred homes destroyed or damaged as well as losses totaling $1 million dollars ($ million adjusted value today). The town was founded by settlers in 1836 and named for West Point on Little Rock River near present-day Springfield, Illinois. The original two storey building still stands today as a museum open to the public. In 1850, it became the seat of government for Randolph County following the merger of that county with Jackson County. From 1870 until 1907 it was also home to an important cotton gin which produced high quality cottonseed products for local markets until it closed down due to lack of demand in 1906. In 1957 West Plains became part of Springfield Township when that township was formed from parts of Randolph and Jackson counties. It has since been annexed by Springfield several times but has always retained its independent status as a separate community governed by its own mayor and school board members
West Plains was a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It was named for General James Wilkinson (1784-1859), who fought with Gen. Andrew Jackson in the American Civil War.
