West Plains, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri. The population of West Plains was 1,549 at the 2010 census. West Plains is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It is bordered by Monroe to the north and east, Dexter to the south and west, and Ballwin to the northwest. The first people who occupied what is now West Plains were Native Americans. In 1819, Captain James Monro set up a trading post in what are now Monroe and Dexter counties. By 1830, there were three settlements in what are now Monroe and Dexter counties: West Plains (founded in 1829), Tomahawk (founded in 1830), and White Sands (founded in 1831). In 1835, General John Custer arrived at Camp Floyd near present-day West Plains and his soldiers built a log cabin here on July 10th as their winter quarters while they fought against Lewis And Clark's Expedition which had just crossed theRocky Mountains. In 1840, settlers from Kentucky started farming around what are today Black Hawk and Old Hickory townships south of present-day Webster Groves. In 1846–1847 William Quantrill's Cavalry raid destroyed most of eastern Missouri; all but two miles of it lay within modern-day Webster Groves boundaries including parts of what are now West Plains Township (including some property that still stands) On February 14th 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant ordered General Order No. 9 to be published throughout all Union army forces ordering troops "to resist any movement or parley" with Confederate forces encountered until such time as unconditional surrender could be given; this orders applied specifically to Confederates found inside Union lines - although many men surrendered without forcing such an exchange After the American Civil War ended on April 12th 1865, much of western Missouri was acquired by Kansas Territory under territorial government control; this included parts of Webster Groves Township which became part of Kansas City., giving rise to name change for various communities within these boundaries including Webster Groves once again becoming Westbrooks when Kansas City incorporated as its own city on November 16 th 1870

West Plains is a town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Major James Kline and named after the Plains of Kansas. The first settlers arrived in what is now West Plains in 1836 and were part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town was platted on January 12, 1840, by Major James Kline with the idea to create a mercantile center for the area. A few months later, on February 10th, 1840, the town plat was filed with the county recorder. The name "West Plains" originated from an early settler's description of a prairie where he had been prospecting: "There are several small hills which rise above all others; they are covered with clumps of trees very high and well-trod." The first store opened in West plains on October 4th 1840. By 1865 there were 10 stores open in West Plains with over $50 000 worth of business done each year. In 1830-1835 there were only six families living within 2 miles (3 km) of downtownWest Plains; however as time went on this number grew to twenty five families by 1850 due to new land acquisitions that were made available for farming near present day West Plains Boulevard/Highway 158/Upper Arkansas Road intersection. Although some residents still relied heavily on agriculture due to its low cost and limited access to markets outside their community during these years, other businesses quickly emerged such as flour mills (owned by Daniel Myrick), wagon repairs (owned by Elisha Goodnight), harness shop (owned by Elijah Arledge), blacksmith shop (owned by John Hightower) and even a post office! By 1860 there were fifteen businesses operating within 2 miles (3 km) of downtownWest Plains with an annual combined sales value totaling $152 912! With so many thriving businesses diversity began to emerge as different sectors such as retail trade became increasingly important within this growing community - exemplified most notably through the establishment of two large department stores: J C Fields & Co., located just south of downtownwest plains from 1876 until it closed its doors in 1984 following bankruptcy but reopened under new ownership in 2009 soon after being abandoned for many years; and Sears Roebuck & Co., which operated from 1901 until their closure in 1994 adjacent to Interstate 44/Route 65 just east of downtownwest plains concurrent with J C Fields' demise leaving only one store remaining unchanged from 1830-1941 including numerous additions including a candy factory(now defunct). As more people moved into west plains ensuing decades various businesses closed or changed hands becoming one big chain or family owned enterprise rather than individuals striving independently against multiple competition! Some notable examples include Checker Mfg., Nascar Racing Cars Inc., Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company - both operations ceased operations after selling their assets back home while others like Radio Shack continued operations until they too closed up shop beginning around 2006 when heavy competition began making it difficult for themto stay afloat financially
