In 1870, United States Senator James Buchanan announced his candidacy for President on an anti-slavery platform and won election using this strategy. When he took office, he appointed Leslie Hine as US Commissioner for Indian Affairs with responsibility for all Native American Affairs in addition to his duties as US Senator. Hine quickly realized that there were many tribes who were not following government regulations regarding Tribal land ownership, and he made progress towards creating some order within the tribe by appointing administrators who would represent each tribe's interests in dealings with federal officials. In 1872, Congress passed legislation authorizing appropriations for Bureau of Indian Affairs expenses which led to increased activity at the agency thanks to more funding from congressmen representing districts around Kansas City and St Louis. In 1886, India Act No 11 created 20% reservation for whites within existing reservations across Dakota Territory; these areas would form what is today Kansas City metropolitan area. By 1893, white settlers had reached as far north as Topeka in central Kansas City; however population growth slowed again due to economic conditions such as railroad construction slowing down trade between stateside markets and new entrant towns coming online such as Topeka and Lawrence (which became Lawrence County) along with continuing violence against Indians caused by white settlers craving land they felt was rightfully theirs while also claiming "Indian" title which helped keep them dominant over their non-native brethren during this time period
West Plains is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1849 by farmers who abandoned a farm on the edge of present-day West Plains and established themselves near what is now the city of St. Peters. The original town name was "Pottersville", but it was renamed after General James K. Polk when he became President in 1845. In 1850, the Platte River ran through West Plains and its citizens built boats to take water from the river for irrigation purposes; this led to their nickname "The Canal People". In 1861, an act authorizing building of a railroad between Saint Louis and Springfield was passed by Congress and approved by President Abraham Lincoln; this madeWest Plains an important junction for rail transportation within Missouri and Illinois. As industry developed in West Plains during the late 19th century, so did housing prices: post office boxes were first offered for sale in 1903. The population peaked at 22,000 in 1920 before decreasing rapidly due to World War II desegregation and other factors; today it stands at 9,898 residents

However, despite being outnumbered five-to-one by Confederate forces, Longstreet's force was repulsed with heavy losses; only 15 men returned alive back to duty that day.[1] This event is widely regarded as one of the decisive successes for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

West Plains was a small settlement in Jackson County, Missouri, founded in 1839 by the brothers John and J.M. West. It was abandoned in the 1840s, and its site is now part of the city of Springfield.
