The "Dowling Gun" was very popular in Britain because it could be fired quickly and accurately from a moderate distance. In 1892, Harry Wesson & Sons began manufacturing handguns in West Plains. They became known for their high quality products and their unique design of handguns called the "Wesson Model 1." This handgun was very successful and enjoyed widespread popularity throughout America during its time period. In 1923, Winchester Repeating Arms Company established a firearms factory in West Plains which became known as Winchester Firearms Corporation. The company produced bolt action rifles, pistols, shotguns, deer hunting rifles and many other types of firearms over the years. Today, Winchester Firearms Corporation is one of the largest firearm manufacturers in the world with over 150 different brands represented on their shelves.
West Plains is a small town in southern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was founded by Methodist ministers in 1856 as West Plains Academy. The academy was destroyed by a fire in 1865, and the town was re-established as West Plains Township. On November 16, 1920, it became an incorporated village when all of Webster County except for West Plains united to form a new county named after Benjamin Franklin Washington. On January 1, 1927, the name of that county changed to Missourihood when all of Webster County seceded from Missouri to become Kansas City and Saint Joseph Counties. In 2001, the township approved plans for a shopping center and high school which would have been located on the site of the old academy building now known as "The Commons." That project never came to fruition because of financial difficulties; however, some renovation work has been done on that building since then. According to the 2010 census, there are two churches in West Plains: First Baptist Church (founded 1915) and Presbyterian Church (established 1846). There also is an elementary school (the East Hill School), three businesses (Nissan Tire & Auto Center/Cafeteria; KFC/Pizza Hut; Walmart), one bar (The Commons Lounge), two schools serving grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade: Algonquin Jr./Sr High School and Keystone Middle School (K-8th); one ambulance service provider— MedStar Ambulance Service—and one funeral home— Funeral Home Associates Inc.—all located within walking distance of each other. According to 2000 census data reported by MO Department of State,[1] there are no cats or dogs living in West Plains Village according to recent censuses taken between 2009 and 2011.[2]
