West Plains, Missouri is a small town in Scott County, Missouri. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. West Plains is located on the eastern edge of Scott County and is bordered to the north by Brushy Creek and to the east by Mount Moriah Cemetery. The town takes its name from West Plains, Illinois which was named after Isaac Newton's family home in Cambridge, England. The first settler in West Plains was John Armstrong who arrived in 1827. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and erected a three-story frame house on what became Elm Street in 1830. In 1838, George Beardsley bought land near present-day Park Road and laid out Streetsboro Township which he called "West Plains." In 1864, it was renamed "East Plains" after General James Halleck who served as Governor of Missouri during that year's Civil War. When Scott County was organized in 1870, East Platte Township (later renamed Park) included parts of what are now West Plains and had a population of about 100 people. The first post office at West Plains was established on December 10, 1840; it operated under the name "Pleasant Hill." On February 19, 1845, it changed its name to "East Prairie". On July 15th of that same year it became "West Prairie". I n 1865 when West Platte Township included parts of what are now West plains they petitioned for incorporation into Scott County but were refused because there were already several towns with similar names within Scott County including Pleasant Valley (founded 1837), Springville (1843), Lebanon (1848), etc... so they formed their own municipality known as "West Plainfield" on January 1st 1870 with a population of about 150 residents.....the change from East Prairie to West Plainfield reflected changing demographics as more people moved westward from Illinois into Kentucky then into southern Missouri....the new municipality prospered until 1888 when fire destroyed most of the buildings leaving only one building standing still today - this building housed the town hall until 1966 when it burned down again causing much damage.......It wasn't until 1988 when an outside group purchased and restored the building which reopened as headquarters for local government services Today there are just over 50 residents living in total settlements along with 2 businesses located inside/outside town limits...mostly agriculture based but some manufacturing too...There has never been any real nightlife or commercial activity happening here unlike other places closer to downtown St Louis where clubs have cropped up recently such as The Elephant Bar or The Rave

West Plains is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settler in West Plains was John Addison who arrived in 1822. He built a cabin on the east side of town and named it after his home state of Vermont. In 1830, he married Maria McNeal and they had two children: John Addison Jr., also known as John A., and Martha Jane Addison (1831-1920). From this marriage stemmed four additional generations of settlers in West Plains; all but one were men. The first school teacher in West Plains was Mrs. Larkin who taught from 1834 to 1840. She was followed by Drs. Jernigan and McKay from 1840 to 1850; then by Mr. Hastings from 1850 to 1860; Drs."Moses" Hahn from 1861 to 1865; and finally Mrs.(Mary) Willard from 1865 until her death in 1876! The first post office opened in West Plains on November 12, 1837 with Elisha Wistar as its first occupant! In 1868, James Prentice built a house on the west side of town which served as the county seat until consolidation with neighboring Ballwin took place that year resulted in an increase population for both towns combined by 3%. When Ballwin's incorporation as a city occurred that same year, most residents relocated there including many teachers who continued to teach out-of-town schools even though their own municipalities did not have such facilities at that time! It wasn't until 1907 when brick blocks began being used for homes within what would become downtownWest Plains when annexation into Ballwin occurred resulting in an increase population for both towns combined by another 5%! With growth came increased traffic causing several businesses along Main Street between Third Avenue and Elmira Road to close or move due to competition! However, word eventually got out about these new businesses and soon enough they were back open serving up some of the best food around! Today, much like when it first settled down into existence (according to date ordered), West Plains has been characterized by its farming community atmosphere while still remaining quite rural looking due largely to its small size making it difficult for more than one family business clustering together without becoming overwhelming!. Although there are now more commercial establishments nearby (mostly due toBallwin annexing neighboring Poplar Bluff), there is still much charm & character found throughout this small town!!
