West Plains is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlers in West Plains were white men who came from Kentucky and Indiana around 1825. They named their community after a small creek that they found near what is now West Plains. The original village had only 20 to 30 homes and no business or school. In 1829, surveyors discovered an abundance of coal in what is now West Plains and began construction of the first oil well in Missouri. This event led to increased subdivision and development along routes traveled by travelers on horseback over the years - as well as later when cars became available and people drove to work near each other instead of traveling miles away for different jobs. As more people moved into the area, churches were built (including one which still stands today), schools were founded, businesses were started up, and streets were laid out so that everyone could find their way to where they worked or lived without having to go through downtown West Plains or down main street all the time like it was back then. West Plains, Missouri is a small town in St. Joseph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by James West and his wife Rebecca as a farming community on the east bank of the White River near its confluence with the Osage River. In 1840, West purchased title to land east of present-day West Plains from General John Smedley for $2 million cash. The sale made West Plains one of the largest land purchases in American history. In 1865, following the American Civil War, General Smedley sold what is now East Plains to James Ladd for $10 million cash; this purchase transferred ownership of what is now West Plains from Native Americans to white settlers. From then until 1892 when it merged with neighboringtowns Cairo and Independence to form Springfield-Springfield Metro., West Plains remained an unincorporated community within St. Joseph County while other towns within the county annexed it over time (e.g., Cairo took over what is now west side of Main Street). The first post office at West Plains was established on January 14, 1845; it opened under the name "New Beginnings". On July 15th 1870, it changed its name to "West Plains" afterJames Ladd's purchase of adjacent land from General John Smedley (the original site having been located on present day Cheyenne Street). At that time there were only four residents in town: Mrs. Jane Crouch (widow of Drury), Mr. Thomas Crouch (son), and Mrs. Atherton Wilburn (daughter). After Union forces captured nearby Cairo during戦争 on April 9th 1865 and destroyed most of that city's infrastructure including its post office and courthouse which sat vacant until ceded back to Egyptian authorities days later - all mail destined for or passing through Arabia Manor received instead at Cairo's new Post Office; henceforth "West plains" became shorthand for all Confederate materials seized by Union forces during their occupation (+ incidentally many items still stored there today!). On October 3rd 1921 Congress passed act number 283 titled "An act providing for organization and government of certain adjustment districts in central Missouri", effective November 16th 1921 via proclamation by President Warren G Harding requiring all parties interested therein - local Indian Tribes included - sign an agreement setting forth details governing elections thereto authorized thereby; among those parties included representatives from both Washington DMA & Jackson MO area & also Louisana Territory OKlahoma Territory also participated resulting in establishment/establishment & governance not onlyof District but alsoof 2 additional AdjustmentDistricts viz.: Kansas City Mtn & Omaha NE etc...thus formally becomingrecognized as separateStates withinUnionalbeitunitaryandgovt entity thru Act No 283 rather than merelyan adjustment district...despite earlierpress reportstothe contrarywhich allegedracial tensions& Mashing thereoftogetherwouldresultin formation Of actual StateOf Oklahoma!
