In 1836, the Kansas Territory was created from parts of Missouri and Iowa. In 1839, the territory was divided into three counties: Platte, Doniphan and Jackson. The county seat of each county was located at West Plains. The first settler in West Plains was David Woodruff who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on a hill above the present day town. In 1840, John Dillard erected a log cabin on the same spot as Mr. Woodruff's cabin. In 1842, Samuel Hays came to West Plains from Carbondale, Illinois with his family and he established his home there. He also platted what is now the town square and built a schoolhouse which he named “Hays” after himself and his father-in-law James Dixon (1802-1894). Mr. Hays donated land for the townsquare today and still resides there with his wife Betty Hays Whitehouse (1907-2006). In 1845, Wm Auld arrived in West Plains from Belleville, Illinois with his family wagon train and he founded what is now known as "Auld's" grocery store on Main Street inWest Plains. A year later he moved to an adjacent lot where he erected another grocery store which became known as "Auld's Second Store." The first post office opened at West Plains on November 1st of that year by Prentice Caldwell serviceable under trader Lewis Cass called "Caldwell's Prairie Post Office." The first postmaster general of Kansas Territory was Hiram Jekyll who served from December 8th until January 6th 1840 when Martin Van Buren took office under Ulysses S Grant . On October 3rd of this year George Washington Griggs announced through proclamation that all public buildings within 4 miles radius should be abandoned due to an outbreak of yellow fever then raging throughout most of Missouri including St Louis County including West Plains had been infected with it! This caused great discouragement among many residents who were already struggling economically during this difficult time period especially given recent fires that destroyed many homes in their community plus widespread crop failures across much of Missouri which contributed to heavy losses for farmers both north and south during the 1840s resulting in mass migration out of those areas toward Nebraska Territory or Ohio Valley
The West Plains area was first settled by the Missourians in the 1820s. The region became a part of Kansas in 1907, and then Texas in 1912. The state of Missouri was admitted to the Union on November 16, 1861, and the West Plains area became part of that state.
