West Plains, MO is a small town located in the central part of Missouri. The population was 3,741 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saline–St. Francois County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now West Plains were farmers who came from Kentucky in 1839 and 1840. They named their new community after a spot west of Independence, KY, on which they saw evidence of an ancient petroglyphs that had been discovered by white men. The first post office was established in 1846, and the first store opened in 1850. By 1860, there were just 10 residents living in West Plains. In 1870, a group of people from nearby Liberty Township formed a company to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of West Plains on the Kansas River for $1 per acre ($/hectare). This land became known as Clydemore Ranch and was later sold to John Sinkfield for $50 per acre ($/hectare). In 1875, Sinkfield built his home called Clydemore House on theranch. The house still stands today and is one of only three remaining examples of ranch-style architecture in Missouri dating back to that time period. In 1905, JK Haggerty founded Haggerty's Grain Mill which remain one of the town's most important businesses to this day. The mill closed its doors for good in 1979 but remains standing as a museum open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm (except Mondays when it’s open from 8am until 1pm). A replica mill has also been constructed at nearby Nokomis Falls State Park since 1978.]] Today, West Plains is a thriving small town with close-knit communities that share common values and interests around education; business; agriculture; family fun; recreation; culture; government services; and more! West Plains was platted in 1836 and named after West Point on Long Island in New York. In 1878, it became a post office under the name of Prairie Village. The community located near present day Independence Heights developed as a result of an early railroad boom that followed the construction of the Missouri Pacific Railroad through St. Francois County in 1881-1882. By 1886, when Chicago's Northwestern Railway came through town and extended its line to Prairie Village, most residents had relocated there because of easy access to jobs on the new train station and other amenities typical of small towns during this period. During World War II many residents left for military service; however, by 1945 all but one buildings had been abandoned and few people remained living in town anymore since most businesses had closed down or moved away during that time period due to lack of customers or competition from larger cities closer by.[1] However some businesses have reopened recently such as gas stations and convenience stores which are now part of the local community spirit rather than being defunct like some older establishments were
West Plains is a town in West Missouri, United States. The population was 1,732 at the 2010 census. It was laid out in 1836 by James S. Meagher and named for his family's holdings west of the Missouri River. The Meagher home-building company had started up before West Plains was founded, and many of the early residents were employees of the company or related to it in some way. The Meagher-owned mercantile store became one of the most popular businesses in town, with its own sectional railroad track leading into town from east to west. In 1868, when Missouri opened its statehood process, West Plains voted to become a part of the new state; it remained so until 1861 when it seceded due to slavery issues. After Kansas left the Union and proslavery sentiments spread across much of western Missouri following the Civil War, West Plains' status as a slaveholding community began to improve while other nearby towns went abolitionist. In 1870s and 1880s there was large growth in farming activities due to good soil quality and easy access to water on account of low elevation along parts of what is now Interstate 44 corridor between St Louis County and Johnson County; this led eventually to increased competition among farmers for limited land available elsewhere (a trend that persisted through subsequent decades). However, despite significant economic development over time – including construction of several churches, schools (including an academy), hospitals and other civic amenities – no major campus ever developed near West Plains as students came seeking more affordable housing opportunities farther north or east on I-44 near Rolla or Independence."
