It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Township, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. West Plains was founded in 1839 by pioneers who arrived from Kentucky and Indiana. The first post office was established in 1841 and the first store opened in 1843. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a railroad line and its access to water supplies. By 1860, West Plains had a school, church, blacksmith shop, sawmill, farmlands and two stores. In 1865, the town became a county seat when it was organized as Holland County. The heyday of West Plains came during World War II when thousands of soldiers barracks were built here for troops stationed abroad. Many residents also worked at local munitions plants or served in the military during that time period. After the war ended in 1945, many businesses closed down and West Plains slowly declined until it reached its current state by 1970." Today, much of what once made West Plains so attractive has been replaced by industry or abandoned buildings: A former bank building now stands vacant; an old movie theater lies derelict on Main Street; and only a few homes remain standing amongst all those demolished during economic recession times back then."

The first guns were designed to fire slugs instead of bullets, so the bore was just a small hole in the center of the barrel. This allowed plenty of air space around the slug for it to gases escape and make contact with another object (the target) before it could explode and cause damage. Because no one wanted their weapon to go off prematurely because an un-fired slug had hit something important inside the barrel, early firearms were designed with some type of checkerboard pattern on their bore that allowed for controlled detonation when fired (see Figure 1). As time went on and more people started using rifles and shotguns, they began to demand higher calibers (firearms having greater numbers of rounds in them), so new barrels were developed specifically for those weapons. The larger calibers required more powerful guns and hence thicker barrels which resulted in less noise when firing as well as improved accuracy. Eventually these thicker barrels became too heavy for most people to carry around all day long so they had to find other ways to fire their weapons- such as by using muzzleloaders which used powder charges hidden under the breech block (see Figure 2). As muzzleloading weapons became more common, smaller calibers became popular due to ease of reloading and hunting down large game animals at great distances.

West Plains is one of the oldest settlements in what is now St. Francois County and was founded by refugees who left Kansas during the American Civil War. The community was named after West Plains, Kansas, where many of these refugees landed. The first settlers in West Plains were farmers who grew corn and beans on their land and raised horses for local transportation to other parts of Missouri. By 1875, only a few families remained in the community and it changed hands several times until it finally belonged to the Knights of Columbus in 1906. In that year, Section 8 (mixed race) housing developments were created around town as part of an effort to integrate black residents into white society. During World War II, West Plains played an important role as a munitions dump for Allied forces stationed in Missouri and nearby states. More than two thousand tons of munitions were stored here between 1944-1945 and some 50 jobs were created during this time period. After the war ended, much of the town's infrastructure was destroyed by fire including schools, churches and businesses; however, restoration began almost immediately with help from federal funding which continues to this day. In recent years there has been investment pouring into new development around town with mixed-race housing developments being built on both sides of Highway 84 just east of town limits; this has helped revive downtown business districts which have seen significant revitalization over the past few years thanks to increased foot traffic from visitors coming through town for all sorts of activities such as shopping or conventions related to west central Missouri’s rich agricultural history including Monsanto products grown hereabouts since before European settlement!
