A group of farmers and businessmen decided to start a gun factory on their farm in 1853. The first guns made from wood were primitive and unreliable, but the company grew and prospered. By 1865, the company had built a successful brick factory on Main Street in West Plains. In 1875, Union troops arrived in Springfield Township to take over control of the county government. The town's residents were forced to flee their homes andtownspeople began stockpiling weapons for defense against Confederate forces. The company continued producing guns until it merged with another business in 1907. thereafter, production ceased altogether and the town was abandoned until 1999 when it was purchased by Gun Owners of America and restored as a museum dedicated to firearms history in West Plains, Missouri

In addition to its core commercial area>, West Plains also includes several residential neighborhoods including Midtown (a section of Westbrook), High Ridge (just north of downtown), Overlook Park (to the east of campus) and Lakeside Heights (to the west).

In recent years some new development has taken place including an apartment complex on Main Street which replaced the original farmhouse; a new high school which opened in 2002; and a Walmart Supercenter which opened near Interstate 44 just south of town on farmland owned by Walmart heirs
