West Plains is a town in Benton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now West Plains was made on May 10, 1836 by a group of men from Peculiarville, Illinois. They named their new town after William Prescott west of Manhattan and John Fenton on the east side of the Missouri River. The first post office was established in West Plains on July 3, 1837. By 1840, West Plains had a store and two churches; it also had nine homes. In 1844, Congress passed an act providing for slavery in Kansas and this caused many people to leave for fear that they would be forced out of their home state. Some decided to stay and start a new life while others left for good. By 1850, only six people remained in West Plains; all were farmers with some cattle or hogs operation as well as some land purchases including three miles (4 km) of railroad track donated by local businessman Lorenzo Mason. In 1861-1862 there were several skirmishes between Union troops and Confederate forces near present day Wichita Falls due to raids by Confederate scouts looking for horses needed for cavalry operations in Kansas Territory In 1865-1866 an irrigation canal was built through what is now West Plains which became one of the most important agricultural projects ever undertaken in Benton County Some residents decided to move back into town after World War II when there were no jobs available outside the agriculture industry
