The first recorded sighting of a big, black bear in the area was in 1868. The town of West Plains was founded in 1871 by two brothers, Isaac and Charles Goodloe. They named their small town after the two bears that they saw hunting near their home. Between 1870 and 1930, there were only a handful of sightings of big black bears in the West Plains area. However, over time, sightings have become more common and regular. In 2003, a group of farmers discovered three cubs nursing at an animal shelter in nearby Hillsboro. This made it the first time that big black bears had been seen in the area since 1870.

In 1851 Congress passed an act providing for organizing Platte County which included West Plains within its boundaries. This created new opportunities for growth as settlers poured into what was then rural Platte County looking for land tooriogeurty grants or homesteads on newly platted farmssteads including those along the Arkansas River where they could have access to water power available from nearby hills or mountainsides. Slowly but surely industry began moving out of The fort; woodworking became popular among farmers because of easy access to woods in this part of Missouri; brickmaking followed in 1855 when quarries were opened up around town; carpentry followed soon after (the first bridge across the river was built here in 1865); and farming took over as mainstay until automobiles arrived in 1925 when tourism quickly replaced agriculture as the dominant force in town life

West Plains, Mo., founded in 1832, is the most northerly of the Kansas City metropolitan areas. The town has grown rapidly since the early days of railroads and automobiles, with a population of more than 25,000 today. The city’s rich history includes moments of great tragedy as well as moments of triumph. The first settlers to West Plains were men from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1832. They built a small cabin on the edge of what is now West Plains before starting a grocery store and trading post. In 1833, they organized a company to purchase 160 acres (65 hectares) along the Missouri River for $1 million. This was an enormous donation that helped start the city’s growth and made it possible for West Plains to become one of Kansas City’s leading communities. The town was renamed West Plains after President James Kansa received an honorary degree from US University in 1865. Kansa had played a significant role in helping organize Kansas City into its present form and he was honored by his state with this prestigious award. The town experienced another major growth spurt during World War I when many local companies became involved in producing munitions for America’s war effort. After hostilities ended, business slowed down but again began to grow during Prohibition years when goods available from abroad were difficult to obtain without trade restrictions.) In 1951, construction began on Interstate Highway 55 which connected Kansas City and St Louis by way of West Plains. The highway created much needed jobs in the area as well as drew travelers away from other towns withinKansasCitydistanceofwestplainsmotor Speedway; however, Interstate 55 quickly deteriorated and was closed down by 1980 due to lack of maintenance funds; however, some restoration work has been done over time) Today, West Plains remains one of KCMO's fastest-growing neighborhoods with more than 20 businesses operating out there including several large banks and restaurants/bars such as Red Lobster and Burger King). There are also numerous shops located within walking distance such as Michaels Stores (home improvement), JCPenney (household supplies), Macy's (furniture), Sears (electronics/ appliances), etc.). Many residents continue their tradition of arts & craftssmanship through various craft shows being held throughout the year at local churches or schools - often attracting top talent from around KCMO!
West Plains, Missouri was founded in 1837 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town was named for a hill on the west side of the river that is now known as West Plains. The town became an important fur trade center for the area and developed into a boomtown during the late 1800s. In 1907, West Plains was moved from its original location to its current location east of Springfield.
