West Plains, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by parties of settlers who crossed the Ohio River from Kentucky to find a new home. The first post office was established in 1853 and the first store opened in 1865. By 1870, the community had a school and two churches. In 1902, West Plains had only one grocery store and six residents. However, during World War I the town became an important training ground for military personnel and experienced rapid growth thereafter; by 1930 it had four stores and sixty-eight residents. In 1948, when Jackson County was merged into Kansas City metropolitan area, West Plains officially became a part of that larger entity too. Today, West Plains remains a tiny community with few businesses or inhabitants outside its own borders; however its spirit lives on through its annual summer festival which features local artists and entertainers as well as food trucks and games for children.

West Plains was founded in 1837 by a group of Mormons who had come to Missouri from Illinois. The community grew rapidly, and by 1840, it had a population of over 200 people. In 1847, the Mormons moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, and West Plains became part of the new city. In 1861, during the American Civil War, West Plains sided with the Confederacy and was burned by Union forces. By 1865, however, West Plains had reverted to Mormon hands and slowly began to grow back into its previous size. In 1868, however, the LDS Church re-established itself in Utah and West Plains disbanded as an independent community. Today, much of what is left of West Plains is located within the boundaries of Grandview Heights neighborhood on east side of town. The early history of West Plains can be best described as pioneers’ outpost on the Great Western Trail which crossed through central Missouri at that time. For years after its founding (1837-1850), there were no schools or other public amenities available in the area due to difficult terrain and lack of water resources. However, this didn’t stop settlers from building their homes and businesses here – many did so while waiting for better times in Nauvoo or elsewhere in central Missouri. Ultimately though (until about 1870), it took until large numbers of Latter Day Saints arrived in Jackson County – specifically those coming through Salt Lake City – before anything like successful farming could take place hereabouts. Eventually though (during Reconstruction Era 1870-1877) some progress was made: a railway reached town; irrigation systems were built; white settlement increased; churches were established; commerce flourished . . . but progress stalled again following World War I when farmers abandoned their land for new opportunities elsewhere or returned home because they found little opportunity hereabouts compared to what they had seen back east where things were finally getting better again after all these years of drought/depression/communism etcetera etcetera etcetera). During our current research project we are trying to understand why things haven’t really taken off since then even though there has been growth scattered throughout eastern Jackson County? West Plains was born in 1821 on a farmstead east of the town of Carthage, Missouri. The first settler in what is now West Plains was Isaac McCoy, who arrived in 1824. In 1830, John Denton and his family moved to the area and started a tannery. The town of West Plains was founded around 1840 by James Houghton, who purchased land from the McCoy family. In 1845, the town became part of Hannibal County, Missouri. A post office was established at West Plains in 1849, and remained in operation until 1907.
