West Plains, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–St Joseph metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1854 by nine men who left Nauvoo, Illinois to found a new settlement on the east bank of the Kaskaskia River near present-day West Plains. The name West Plains derived from an early settler's Indian name for the site: "Wabasha." A post office called West Plains was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1906, the community erected a school building and became one of five towns in Jackson County to receive funding from the federal government under President Theodore Roosevelt's National Industrial Recovery Act program. In 1959, West Plains became home to America's first electronic commerce store when Gateway Electronics opened its doors on Main Street. Gateway was purchased by JCPenney in 1987 and closed down in 2000. In 2006, Verizon finally completed construction of a new $26 million headquarters campus adjacent to Gateway which will house more than 2,000 employees. It stretched from Clayton Creek south to Williamstown (now Anaconda) creek and extending westward along present-day Stoddard Drive NE to Fort Scott. In 1827, John Cramer purchased "Hickey's Purchase" from Peter Hickey for $1,000 cash and 10 acres of land at present day US 60/270th Street NE. This purchase extended from east side of Clayton Creek up Ralston Road about 3 miles to current day US 60/270th Street NE." "Cramer's Purchase," located north of town on CR 8062NW about 5 miles east of Pryor Township then organized as Knox County on February 12, 1830 included all territory lying east bank of James River until it met the river at modern day MO 26 northwest of Rolla."
