The town was founded in 1849 by two brothers, William and Matthias Westphalen. They named their new community after the Plains of Abraham, which were located to the east of their farmstead. The Westphalens were German immigrants who had come to America in 1825 and had operated a farm near Independence, Missouri for several years before moving to what is now West Plains. In 1849 they sold their farm and moved to what is now the eastern edge of town; they built a log cabin on an isolated rise overlooking the village and started developing it as a commercial center for the surrounding area. In 1873 James Hahn purchased land within sight of West Plains from the Westphalens; he began building his present-day home there that same year. Hahn was one of early settlers in what is now downtownWest Plains and remained its original proprietor until his death in 1951. He left behind an architectural legacy that includes many notable buildings including his own private residence (now known as "The James Hahn House"), three churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Methodist Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church), and numerous businesses including The Hahn Store (operated from 1865 until 1951) and Jonsell's Drug Store (founded 1861). West Plains, Missouri was once a thriving community located in the heart of the Ozarks. The town was founded in 1871 by two brothers, John and Augustus White. The White family had come to Missouri from Illinois and were farmers. They began farming in what is now West Plains after purchasing land from the nearby Kossuth Land Company. The town grew rapidly due to its location, good soil, and cheap labour. In 1875, West Plains became the first city in Missouri to be provided with water by private enterprise. By 1907, the population of West Plains had reached 2,500 people. However, during World War I, the town struggled as many residents enlisted in military service instead of staying home to help run their farms. In 1924, West Plains merged with neighboring towns Clinton and Marshall to form a new municipality known as West Plains-Clinton-Marshall. This merger allowed for more social services and better infrastructure within the new municipality than could have been found within individual towns. As a result of this merger,Westphalia (later called West Plains) became one of the most heavily populated municipalities in Missouri. Today there are few reminders that once upon a time Westphalia was an important community located outside of Kansas City on Route 66 just north of Interstate 70
