Wentzville became a community when the railroad arrived in 1853. The first store was built in 1857, and the first school opened in 1861. A cotton gin and three sawmills were built between 1865 and 1870; these helped to create what is now Wentzville's industrial base. In 1904, construction began on the Wentzville Arsenal which later became one of the largest munitions plants in America. After World War II, many businesses closed around Wentzville due to competition from larger cities such as Kansas City or Springfield, Missouri. However, some new businesses have started up since then including an agricultural store, a video game store, and a restaurant/bar called "Pizza Place". Wentzville features original downtown buildings dating back to before its incorporation into Randolph County as well as several additions made over time including a large library (opened 1935) and two hospitals (one opened 1932). The most recent addition is an amphitheater that seats 2200 people for events like concerts or dances. Wentzville is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. The name Wentzville comes from George Washington Wentz and his son-in-law Daniel Webster. The first settlers in the area were German immigrants who arrived in 1813. They named their new settlement "Etzchig" after their home village of Eichstätt, Bavaria. The first post office was established in 1819 and the first store opened in 1830. In 1837, a sawmill was built on the river near present-day Wentzville to produce lumber for local buildings and surrounding farms. A blacksmith shop also operated here during this time period. In 1868, George Washington Wentz purchased land east of town from James Sells for $5 per acre (the current site of Old Route 66). This became the nucleus of what would become Wentzville proper. He began construction on what would become his largest home at 640 acres (248 hectares), which henamed "The White House". The house was completed in 1870 and served as both his official residence and business headquarters during his years as Governor of Missouri; he also used it as a personal retreat during many visits to St. Louis between 1840 and 1865. It remains one of Missouri's most prominent historical landmarks today! During World War II,went to work at American Leyland Motors plant located just outside St.. Francois County
