Wentzville, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first optical accessory store in Wentzville was established by Harry Aiken and his wife Inez Aiken in 1922. The Aikens operated a small hardware store on Court Street which they sold optical supplies such as telescopes and binoculars to residents of Wentzville and surrounding towns. By 1936, Harry Aiken had opened an additional business on Third Street called "Oasis Optical". This store offered a variety of optical products including eyeglasses and contact lenses, watch bands, clocks and other jewelry items. In 1945, Oasis Optical became known as "Wentzville Optics" when it merged with another local optic shop named "Optical Services". At this time, Optical Services was run by John Wesseling who also served as the company's president from 1951-1957. In 1957-1959, Vito Zanghese took over as president of Optical Services after John Wesseling resigned due to health concerns. In 1969-1970 Frank Pappas opened an optics store located on Main Street which he called "Pappas' Optical". This Store offered a wide selection of optoelectronic devices such as projectors and scanners along with eye spectacles and sunglasses among other types of optical equipment. From 1970 until 1978 Pappas operated his business out of his home on Elmwood Avenue which he renamed "Pappas' Place". During this time period Pappas also developed what would become Wentzville's most famous product - the world's first electronic microscope (the Zeiss microscopes). This innovative device allowed users to view physical objects up close for the first time without having to take special precautions or wear cumbersome goggles or protective clothing
