Wentzville, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Wentzville is located on the north bank of the James River just east of I-435 and south of MO-39. The first settler in Wentzville was David Gentry in 1821. By 1827, there were three families living in Wentzville: Gentry, Bowen, and Green. In 1830, John Hargrave settled in Wentzville and began to grow corn for market. He also raised hogs and pigs for meat. The first store opened in Wentzville in 1836 by Wm. Pemberton and Jno Merrill (the two brothers who founded Merrill Bros., grocery stores). In 1840, William Moulton built a house on Main Street near present day Hawkins Road. Moulton operated a boardinghouse for travelers called the Inn at the Falls until 1861 when he sold it to Isaac Stoutenburg (1811-1876). In 1865, John Ackerlund bought Stoutenburg's interest and continued to operate the Inn until 1870 when he sold it to Simeon Fellows (1820-1903) who ran it as an hotel until 1909 when it was purchased by George Swartzwelder (1862-1937) who operated it as a inn until his death in 1937 which led to its sale back to Fellows' son Arnold Swartzwelder Jr.. Arnold Swartzwelder Jr.'s wife Mildred ran it as an inn from 1939 until her death in 1984; then she bequeathed it to her third cousin Edwin Laddis III who operates it currently as an historic Bed & Breakfast since 1954 (eds.) By 1865, when Wentzville incorporated, it had grown to over 100 residents and included a store, post office, schoolhouse/library, several churches (including one dedicated to St. John the Baptist), two mills (one powered by water power), two sawmills (the first being built c 1830), two blacksmiths' shops (the last still extant in operation), three farms (some with more than one hundred acres of farmland), four barns/houses—all within walking distance of each other—a cooperatives store and bakery along with six private homes hugging either side of Main Street between Isis Road and Logansport Road; all these residences were single-family dwellings until recently when they have been replaced by multi-unit apartment buildings or structures featuring brick facade elements characterizingProsperity Village developments typified by high levels of public infrastructure amenities such as underground parking garages for bicycles or cars etc.—a result of suburban sprawl following World War II when many young people moved away from cities for economic opportunities created overseas after defeated Axis powers pulled out from war).
