Wentzville is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Jackson County seat since 1837. The municipal government was organized in 1837 and first met on July 4th. The current Mayor is Burt O'Neill and the Town Clerk is Kathy Godfrey. The town of Wentzville was founded by John Wentz in 1827 as a small community on the east bank of the White River. At first it consisted only of his home and barns, but he soon developed a trading post and outfitter shop there, which became one of the most important economic hubs in central Jackson County. In 1851, Wentzville became an incorporated village under the name of "Wentzville." In 1865, it merged with neighboring Springdale to form what is now called "Wentzville-Springdale." Gun violence in Wentzville has been documented throughout its history. A series of shootings that took place between 1861-1863 resulted in three fatalities and twenty-one injuries; these shootings were believed to be related tothe Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854), which opened up new territory to slavery south of Missouri lines. In 1916 an attempted assassination against then-Governor James Buchanan occurred within minutes after he had finished speaking at a Republican Party fundraiser banquet at Wentzville's Masonic Temple; this attack remains one of only two successful assassinations on Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency (the other being Andrew Johnson's shot while driving from Ford Motor Company headquarters to work). From 1915 until 1933 local newspapers published weekly fact sheets listing statistics about gun crimes and safety tips for residents; these Fact Sheets have been preserved as evidence at the Missouri Historical Survey library in Jefferson City today. In 1934 local authorities began arresting citizens who failed to keep their firearms unloaded when not using them for hunting or target practice; this policy continued into World War II with stricter regulations governing gun ownership than ever before....

Wentzville became a state capital in 1861 and served as such until it moved to Springfield, Missouri in 1865.
