In 1837, when Stonington Township was formed within present-day Marshall County, Wentzville became its center; however, it continued to grow slowly until it gained full incorporation as an independent municipality in 1876. During this time period there were several significant events that contributed to Wentzville's growth: First, several families moved into town during 1837-1838 because they felt they would find more opportunity here than back home on the frontier; second, some old schoolhouses were replaced with larger homes; third, construction began on what is now known as "the big dance," which served as a ceremonial event marking municipal incorporation; fourth, various churches were built or renovated including one that still stands today called "the Good Shepherd." Finally, thanks to railroadroads connecting Marshall County with neighboring counties eastward (and eventually Illinois), more people began arriving here and businesses grew quickly because transportation became essential for moving goods around these rural areas.
