Wentzville is a small town in north-central Missouri, United States. The population was 3,692 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Ozark Mountains and is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1836 by Peter Wentz and James [Pete] Wentz, Wentzville was named after their father, John Wentz. The first post office in Wentzville was established in 1839. In 1865, William H. Ladd opened a general store here which became one of the largest mercantile businesses in the area. The Ladd family sold their business to Orson Wortley in 1903 and it continued as a grocery store until 1978. The first school in Wentzville was built on land donated by sir Isaac Nourse in 1838. A second school was constructed on land donated by Amos Tilton near what is now Main Street in 1850. Both schools were operated by private individuals and did not have any government support until 1861 when a public school district was organized around town with nine schools (one being School #2). The first superintendent of education for this new district was Rev Solomon Morse who served from 1861 to 1865. In 1868, Jesse Fenton added an academy to go along with his already successful farmstead restaurant/gristmill operation called "The Gables" that he had started two years earlier from some rented buildings on his property south of town center across from where Interstate 44 crossed Arkansas River just east of Wherewithal High School today (the old site of I-44's current interchange). This restaurant/gristmill became known as "Fenton's", still operating today downstairs at 401 E Walnut St., except during Prohibition when it closed due to prohibition laws prohibiting such gambling establishments within 1,000 feet of public transportation facilities like trains or buses; however upstairs 'Fenton's' continued serving delicious gristmills up until 1984 when they moved out because they got into financial trouble due to high levels of electricity usage caused by big lights inside! I-44 bridge over Arkansas River: Just east of Wherewithal High School today there once stood a large granite boulder marking where I-44 crossed the Arkansas River just east of where Interstate 44 intersected it - before becoming its present eastern terminus about 2 miles west then inland beyond that point - making this spot especially hazardous for motorists during flood days as water would slowly rise upstream under I-44's heavy traffic flow creating dangerous conditions for drivers trying unsuccessfully to cross while rising waters threatened all crossings downstream including those across Highway 64 which paralleled I-44 just northwest of hereabouts; see photo below left showing remnants Of Former I- 44 Bridge Over Arkansas River
