Webster Groves is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,570 at the 2000 census. Webster Groves is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General James Webster (1765-1828), a hero of the War of 1812 and one of the first U.S. Marines. The grove is located on what is now Webster Boulevard between Elmwood and Park streets near Mount Zion Cemetery. It started as a few small log homes in 1855 and soon became an agricultural center with over 50 family farms supplying food for many residents in surrounding villages including Springfield and Lebanon. In 1886, Webster Groves had its own post office which continued to serve until 1907 when it merged with nearbySpringfield Post Office to form the present Springfield Post Office cluster. The first store opened in 1885 on property that became home to today's Webster Groves Elementary School and Central High School (now known as Northwest Missouri State University). A second store opened in 1901 on adjoining land that would later become home to Eastern Illinois University's Law School and Alice Palmer Children's Hospital before becoming a general store again in 1912 after being bought by J P Lewis who renamed it "Lewis Store". By 1932 there were six stores operating within five blocks of each other serving nearly 3,000 customers; this figure would increase by 100% during World War II when grocery shopping went from being an occasional convenience to an everyday activity as refrigerated transport made grocery delivery possible across much of America In 1951, Lewis Store was sold to local grocer Ralph Henschel who operated it until his death in 1984; after his death Gertrude Henson took over operations until her sale to Walmart in 1999 which subsequent rebranding has kept unchanged since then In recent years several businesses have closed or been sold off leaving only two buildings remaining - one currently used as a daycare while the other serves as a storage facility for agricultural equipment . In 1821, it became part of territorial government for Jackson County, Missouri under governor James Muhlenberg. In 1835, a group of settlers from Illinois called the Gentry party explored and settled near present day Webster Groves. Their arrival led to an increase in trade between Illinois and Missouri due to their goods becoming available at cheaper prices thanks to transportation improved by railroadsandythe development of which began shortly after their arrival
