Webster Groves, located in Webster County, Missouri, was founded in 1836 by Captain James Webster and his wife. The current site of the Groves home was donated by Mrs. Groves to the county in 1957. Captain Webster is buried at the Groves home. In 1839, Colonel John S. Worth purchased a tract of land adjoining that of Captains Webster and Worth, which he subdivided into lots for sale to settlers.
The first Europeans to come to the area were French traders in the late 18th century. The area was heavily forested and used for hunting, so it was not until after the American Revolutionary War that any settlement started. In 1795, a group of soldiers from Missouri under General James Wilkinson came across a Native American village on the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Wilkinson decided to explore what he thought was an empty landmass, which turned out to be much more populated than he had anticipated. He founded Independence Hall in 1797 as a temporary capital for his new nation. The town gradually grew into a substantial community with homes, businesses, and schools. By 1800, Independence Hall had become the seat of government for all of Missouri. The town prospered until 1836 when it was destroyed by a fire that burned down most of its buildings. After this event, Independence Hall was abandoned and slowly collapsed over time until it finally fell apart in 1945.
