Webster Groves was named after James Webb, an early settler and one of the first white men to live on the east side of what is now Webster Groves Township. WebsterGroves was laid out in 1837 by Joshua Webber and his brother-in-law Samuel Latham. The grove came into being when members of the Webber family bought land in what is now Webster Groves Township from John Thornton for just $5 per acre ($40 per kilometer). James Webb, one of the founders of Bloomington, Illinois (now St. Louis), came to this new community while on a trip through Missouri in 1839 and purchased 5 acres from Joshua Webber for $10 per acre ($60 per kilometer). By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Webster Groves Township and its environs with about 20 businesses providing services such as agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, trade and retail goods to their constituents. The early years were difficult for Webster Groves due to competition from larger towns on the east bank of the river where farmers could build better homes at a lower cost than those available in rural Webster Grove (). Webster Groves was platted on November 3, 1855, by George Prentice and others under the name of "Grovesville". In 1907, Webster Groves became the official seat of St. Francois County when it was organized from parts of Clay and Callaway counties. In 1909, Webster Groves voters passed a $2 million bond issue to build a new courthouse and jail within its limits. The project was completed in 1912 and includes a fine Arts & Crafts-style building that now houses the St François County Library%. The first post office in WebsterGrove opened on November 3, 1855; it served as one of several until it closed on December 15, 1916. The first settler in what would become Webster Groves were two brothers named John Wetherbee and Isaac Prentice who came overland from Ohio Territory during the late 1840s looking for property to purchase near where they hoped to bury their father who had died while exploring some new land west of Springfield,.
