Webster Groves is a town in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. WebsterGroves was founded in 1868 by John Webster and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Harmon as a post office and wagon stop on the North fork of the Kansas River. The first store was built in 1870. In 1870, John Webster married Bathsheba Ackerlund and they started a family. They also raised cattle and hogs. In 1881, they bought land on which they built what is now their largest home - an eight story red brick building with limestone trim that remain today. In 1907, Mrs. Webster died suddenly at age 80 years old; John had just passed away two years earlier from natural causes related to heart disease caused by overwork from running their business). They were survived by six children: Lillie (1892-1978), John Jr., Alice (1895-1982), George (1920-2012), Clarence (1924-2009) and Pearl (1928-present). Mr. Webster adopted his six children into his own family after he lost them all to cancer when he was only 58 years old himself! John Wetherbee who ran an appliance store next door to them for many years until his death in 2006 donated much of his equipment to be used in building the new library which opened its doors on October 15th 2009 with much fanfare! This beautiful structure has been nothing short of a local icon since it opened its doors! Oh how I loved going inside those large white walls during those warm summer days while my husband listened patiently as I shared some stories with my lovely friends below… The community agrees that Webster Groves has always been one of America's most “handsome” towns – not just because of what we see on our streets but also because of who makes up our community! Our talented citizens have made so many contributions to this great place – both through their work within our businesses or through their time spent volunteering or serving others outside the community itself! In 1851, the town became a county seat of St. Francois County. The population decreased during the Great Depression and World War II; however, it increased after the war when new factories were built in the area. The population reached its peak in 1951, when it had residents living within walking distance of each other. However, since then there has been little growth or development in Webster Groves. One significant event that took place in Webster Groves occurred during World War II when General George Patton's Third Army passed through on their way to battle Nazi Germany at D-Day beaches invasion Normandy on June 6th 1944. Many people from Webster Groves came out to see this large military engagement taking place and many signed up for service with the army either before or after the war ended.
The Webster Groves area was first settled in the late 1800s. The grove is named after John Webster, a Revolutionary War soldier and settler who donated land to the town. The first homes were built in the early 1900s, and growth continued through the 1940s and 1950s. In 1954, the community became part of St. Louis County. Growth slowed during the 1970s and 1980s as manufacturing left for more affordable locations in Illinois and Michigan. However, recent growth has been spurred by new development in central Missouri and a growing population of retirees living near downtown St. Louis.
