Webster Groves was platted on October 2, 1836, by Colonel John C. Fremont and his wife Lucy Ann Morse; it became a town on January 14, 1840, from part of nearby Joplin. The name comes from Webster County in Kentucky where early settlers were Fromeites who named their farm for General James Webb (1768-1834), Commander of British forces in North America during the War of 1812. The grove's namesake is Timothy Webster (1762-1837), one of two brothers who founded what would become Springfield in 1786. Timothy was born to an English family that had come overland to start a new life in this new world; he attended Transylvania University and then worked as a lawyer before starting his own law practice in Springfield. In 1825 he married Mary Todd Lincoln and they moved to Washington D.C., where they raised six children before returning to Springfield around 1850 and buying the land around which Webster Groves sits today. In 1860 they built the first school building on present day Main Street; it served as their home until 1893 when they moved into their current structure which dates back to that year. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) Webster Grove sided with Confederate States Army troops against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant; however, after the war most residents turned Republican Party sympathizers and voted for Abraham Lincoln in November 1860 even though many did not live within easy reach of central Illinois because there were no roads or railroads then! After Lincoln's inauguration on February 12th 1861, all but 3 out of 5 original memberships in the Post Office Association – including those held by Mrs Martha Webster – switched allegiances and voting patterned themselves into office as 'Unionist Republicans'. This shows how close many people felt to both sides during this time; it was also an indication that warfare had taken its toll on society morale especially among young menfolk! Webster Groves was a small town in the eastern part of Missouri, United States. It is located on the border of Webster County and Jackson County. The population was 5,500 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Webster Groves was John Crouch in 1819. He built a log cabin on the east side of creek near present day Glendale Boulevard and Old Hwy 6. In 1825, he married Sarah Goodspeed and had two children: John (1826-1892) and Sarah (1829-1892). They were among the first farmers in this area. In 1830, James Crouch bought 640 acres from John Goodspeed for $200 cash. James moved his family to this area and started farming with his son James Jr., also known as Jim or Jimmie, who would later become one of the most successful farmers in Webster Groves history. In 1840, they added 50 more acres to their farmstead which made it 1,000 acres total. By 1850, they had another 200 acres just south of their current home on Old Hwy 6 where they built a large house that still stands today called “The Crouch Mansion” which served as their main home until around 1960 when it was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Longacre for use as a schoolhouse operated by Lighthouse Park School District No 2 after being damaged by fire in 1968 It wasn’t until 1859 that any formal development took place within what would eventually become Webster Groves when Fenton Pogue purchased 1/2 mile east of their original home land from James Crouch for $350 dollars which he donated back to society for educational purposes after some problems arose with its use as farmland Pogue named his new subdivision “Grovesville” after himself but due to objections from local residents who wanted something closer to them there wasn’t much progress made until 1875 when David Muhlenberg purchased 3/4 mile north of grove village limits from Pogue for $225 dollars which created what is now known as Muhlenberg Heights/Muhlenberg Road . This purchase allowed him to start developing homes along several streets that run through central grove including Elm Street, Maple Leaf Drive (later renamed Saugerties), Hickory Lane (later renamed Meadowbrook), Lawndale Drive (later renamed Indian Trail), Cherry Hill Road (now defunct) and finally Glendale Boulevard between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane Today there are several streets running through central grove including Elm Street between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane; Maple Leaf Drive between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane; Hickory Lane between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane; Lawndale Drive between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane; Cherry Hill Road between Indian Trail & Hickory Lane as well as numerous driveways leading into or out of central grove . There are also several thousand visitors each year coming here specifically for events like Jazzfest , Heritage Days , Christmas Tree Sale etc .. The number one reason people come here is shopping since it has many stores nearby such As Macy’s , Sears , JCPenney etc .. Although not always easy to find especially during busy times like holiday seasons you can usually find plenty of businesses open late if you look hard enough
The first white settlers in what is now Webster Groves, Missouri were James and Nancy Butler who arrived in 1811. The town was named after General John Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The Butlers set up a mill on the creek that flows through the town. In 1824, Reverend Elijah Howe built a small chapel in Webster Groves and started to preach there. In 1831, Mayor Samuel Morse donated land to build a courthouse and jail. The town's first school was built on this property in 1835. In 1861, about 30 people from Carthage bought 1 acre of land east of the old post office to start a new community called Carthage Heights. They renamed it Webster Groves after Samuel Morse. Webster Groves became an incorporated village in 1865 and had its own police force until 1915 when it joined the city of St Louis under mayor John Pendergast's control. The city merged with St Louis County in 1932 and Webster Groves became part of that county again; however, it has since been annexed by St Petersburgh (now Petersburg) Township (www.stpetersburghtownshiponlinecom).
