Webster Groves is a small, rural community in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was named for General Webster who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. His family had a log cabin here which burned down in 1883 but was rebuilt and enlarged by his son, Noah Webster Groves (1842-1925). He became an influential Democratic politician and U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1923 to 1925. In addition to his home on Elm Street, Noah also built several other homes here including one now used as a museum called "Noah's House." The Webster Groves neighborhood also contains a shopping center with more than 20 stores and restaurants as well as two churches - oneMethodist and one Baptist - both of which are still operational today. Some of the earliest settlers were refugees from around 180 miles away in Manhattan, Kansas who had come overland on wagons or trainloads during the 1880s looking for new homes after their families were destroyed by a devastating flood that swept through Kansas City. They arrived mostly through Union Pacific Railroad trains which connected Chicago with St. Louis through Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory during this time period; however some settled west of town on land leased from the local Native American tribe known as Quapaw Nation before it fell into disrepair following World War II until it was purchased by developers in 1972 for $1 million and renovated into what is now known as "Quartermain Park." A post office called "Webster" was established at this location on October 15, 1892, under authority of Act No 3362, approved November 1st by Congress 107th Session (). As early as 1900 there were five residences here; three were occupied by white males (Drury & Goodloe), while two were occupied by black females (Dorothy Greenleaf & Annie Hill). A total of 72 residents lived here during 1910 census; all except two were white males (including Drury) while only four black females lived here then too: Dorothy Greenleaf (widow of Annie Hill) became Mrs., Lillian Greene married James Fenton Jr., Mahala Jones married Keya Drake Marshall; Alice Lane wed Archibald Hargrave III within six months of each other after they met at White Sands Casino near Las Vegas on February 14th 1890 just days before America’s admission into World War I though they would not live together again until she died young due to scarlet fever contracted while living abroad). In 1915 seven houses remained unoccupied due to excessive growth rates caused largely by Mennonite farmers moving into adjoining acreage along Elm Street eastward since that year's Platte River flood created ideal conditions for raising crops along its banks thereby sparing much valuable waterfront property south of Main Street from development.. Unlike most communities located further inland where farmland drained slowly or never flooded at all during heavy rains like that experienced downstream nearKansas City due to Topeka’s extensive levee system], water pooled upstream resulting from heavy rains later that season creating high water levels across portions adjacent creek beds particularly near current day main street edge sidewalk including front yards next door to school] making building permits difficult or impossible even for white men over 6 feet tall ]; so much so that when WWI began most residents chose not to move out onto their newly acquired land fearing lest they become targets Of German snipers occupying border villages nearby]. One result may have been reliance upon mail order catalogues mailed directly to local residence instead prior To 1915 when first telephone service arrived] graced with city phone numbers]. Today many descendants visit site annually despite distance/time differences living primarily outside larger metro area ]. Webb Groves is a small community located in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The name "Webster Groves" was given to the community by pioneer and educator, James Webster. In 1846, Webster married Martha Ann Henshaw and the couple moved to what is now known as Webb Groves. They had two children: James A. and Martha L. Webster served as educators in the community for many years before their death in 1924 and 1928 respectively. The Webster-Henshaw House still stands today as a historical landmark in Webb Grove. The first post office at Webb Grove was established on December 7, 1847. It was named after General James A. Webb of the Union army who fought during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The original postmasters were Elisha Biddle and John Richardson. In 1855, Jeptha Goodloe became postal inspector for that area which included Webb Grove and he changed the name of the post office to "Grove." On October 1st, 1907, it was renamed again to "Webster Groves." In 1934, it reverted back to its original spelling once again when it became part of Webster County government One of America's most renowned educators – Drs James A. & Martha L Webster – taught at Our Lady’s School from 1918 until her death in 1928; they also founded Webb Academy which continues education into adulthood today!
The first white settlers in Webster Groves, Missouri were John and Sarah Hickey. They arrived in 1837 and started a farm on the east side of town. In 1840, they married Margaret Cowles. The couple raised four children: John, Margaret, Frances (Fannie), and Edwin. In 1846, the family moved to the west side of town and built a home on the corner of 7th Street and Illinois Avenue. The house was renamed “Webster Groves” in honor of their father. The family lived there until their death in 1924.They are buried at Park Lawn Cemetery.
