The Webster Groves gun company was founded in 1892 by Hiram Webster. In 1898, the company became part of the Browning Rifle Company and produced guns under that name until 1950. The Webster Groves gun factory was closed in 1951 and all production ceased. All but a few pistols were exported to other countries. The last pistol made at the plant was a model 9994, which was manufactured in 1957.

In 1916, Webster Groves received its first fire department and in 1922 it became home to the country's first high school. In 1934, Webster Groves was annexed into St Louis County and the population declined until it reached its current level of around 21,000 in 1990.

The first settlers in Webster Groves were George and Jane Webster who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on the east side of town and named it "Webster Grove." The Websters ran a mill until 1840 when they moved to their present location on the west side of town where they continued to operate a gristmill and produce flour for local markets until 1868, when they sold their property to John Dickey for $10,000. Mr. Dickey developed Webster Groves into an important commercial center with his stores (Dickey's store and warehouse), post office (1869-1977), telephone company (1907-1920), hospital (1915-present), and school district (1925-present). He also served as village president from 1901 to 1908 and mayor from 1907 to 1909. In 1916 he founded the Webster Groves civic association which continues to play an important role in community life today. In addition to its commercial interests, WebsterGroves has long been known for its architecture - one of the most distinctive features being its many fine Craftsman style homes dating back to the early 1800s. Today, this traditional architectural style is still popular throughout the country with many homeowners choosing it as their preferred choice for residential design because of its strengths including insulation value and simple construction techniques that allow these homes to be updates or replacements relatively easily without havingto tear down entire structures

In 1820, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Webster Groves. A store was built on the corner of Euclid and Elm Streets, and the name was changed to Webster in 1824. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 there were over 100 residents. In 1836, the Missouri legislature passed a bill that designated Webster as a town meeting place. The townspeople voted to rename themselves "Webster Groves" on October 6, 1936.
