Today, Webster Groves remains one of America’s most agriculturally based communities with over 95% of its residents dependent on agriculture for their income. There are also several businesses located in this sleepy town which provide employment for many people living hereabouts: numerous banks (most notably FirstMerit Bank), restaurants/cafés/bars/halal stores etc., along with smaller businesses providing everything from home repairs to hair dressers and florists; there are even three golf courses within driving distance! Webster Groves is a district in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 149 at the 2010 census. It is named after Alexander Webster, a surveyor who platted the area in 1836. The groves are located on the east side of town, bordered by Union and Oakland Avenues to the north, North Parkway to the south, and Interstate 55 to the west. The first settlers in this area were farmers who arrived around 1780. They grew corn, wheat, and other crops until needed for food could be produced only in Illinois or Pennsylvania. A group of men from Dixonvilleigrated here in 1836 and platted what would become Webster Groves. They named their land for General George Washington because he had been an important figure during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1870 Webster Groves was annexed into St. Clair County; until that time it had been part of Clayton Township. In 1907 it became part of St Louis County when that county was formed from parts of three previous counties: Clayton, Ferguson Heights, and Newton Park.[1] According to the US Census Bureau's 2006 American Community Survey,[2] there were 151 people living in Webster Groves District Population density: 798 people per square mile (286/km²). There were no housing units at all available within 1 mile (1 km) of any public library or school.[3] In 2000 Census[4], however, there were 152 people residing within 1 mile (1 km) of any public library or school according to their responses to ancestry surveys taken before moving into their new homes;[5] thus making WebsterGrovesDistrict's2000 population much more likely than its 2006 population to have come from inside one mile (one km) of any public library or school!
The Webster Groves neighborhood in Missouri was first settled in the mid-19th century. The name comes from General James Wilkinson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as Polk's Secretary of War. The area around present day Webster Groves was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1821. After the United States acquired Kansas from Mexico in 1846, a group of American settlers began to move into what is now Webster Groves. These pioneers were led by Gideon Welles and his brother, Noah Welles. In 1850, they founded the first post office here. In 1861, during the Civil War, General John Custer attacked a Union supply train near here while on his way to battle at Gettysburg. The attack caused many casualties and destroyed much equipment and supplies for the Union army. As a result, this event is commonly known as "the Battle of Webster Groves." After the war ended, many Americans decided to remain in Missouri because it offered more opportunities for success than Illinois or Indiana did. They built homes and businesses here and commerce grew rapidly thanks to these new residents. During World War II, much activity took place within miles of this location due to plants being produced at nearby Monsanto Company and other companies located thereabouts. This production helped keep Missouri competitive with neighboring states during wartime timesand contributed significantly to its economy postwar
