Webster Groves was platted in 1836 and named for John Webster, a landowner who donated the town site to the county. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first store opened in 1840. In 1853, Webster Groves incorporated as a village and had its own school board until it merged with what is now Springfield in 1907. In 1960, Webster Groves became an independent municipality again when it seceded from Springfield over disagreements about zoning laws and development plans. The St. Louis County Board of Elections moved all of its operations to WebsterGroves during that year's general election campaign as part of a larger effort to consolidate municipal governments across St Louis County into one entity under more effective management.

Webster Groves is a small town in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. For many years, Webster Groves was one of the most important cotton and corn-growing villages in America. In 1853 it had a population of 1,500 people; by 1860 it hadgrown to 9,000 people. The township's first school was built in 1852 on land donated by Captain John Sutherlin and his family. A second school was built in 1855 on land donated by Amos Kendall and others. In 1865, when Webster Grove School District was organized, its first superintendent was Hiram Weems (1824-1909). By 1870 there were fourteen schools in the district; four were within the Township boundaries but served as independent schools: Mechanicsville School (Fenton Road), Oak Hill School (east of High Street), Indian Spring School (west of High Street), and Westbrook Schools (southwest corner of First Avenue and Old Main Street). In 1871 an addition to the old high school building became the new Normal Training School for Girls which educated female teachers from Illinois until 1918. After that time it closed as a normal high school but continues to be used for cultural events such as plays and concerts throughout the year including occasional music festivals called "The Great White Way." After World War II Webster Grove began to experience rapid growth due to its location at I-435 Exit 108B just south of St Louis County Airport making it easy for businesses to come into town
