Webster Groves, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of southwestern Missouri. The town was founded in 1836 by Jesse Webster and his brother John. In 1881, it was renamed after Webster's grandson, Daniel Webster. The town had a population of 792 in 1921 and 1,847 in 2010. It is currently the county seat of Newton County. Jesse Webster (1793-1868) was an entrepreneur who built up the town into a thriving center for agriculture and commerce during the mid-19th century. He purchased land around what is now Webster Groves from Native American tribes and began developing it into a larger community with brick homes, a store, and schools. He also played an important role in helping to create the first state government in Missouri. The townsite at present-day Webster Groves was originally part of what is now Jackson County territory. When Jackson County was created from parts of both Randolph and Scott counties on January 1, 1821,[1] Jesse Webster became its first president.[2] In 1824 he donated land to make room for a courthouse[3] and later developed other civic facilities including a schoolhouse and post office.[4] By 1840, most of the original white settlers had moved out or been killed by Indian attacks,[5] so much so that only three buildings remained standing within the boundaries of present-day Webster Groves when James Mapes surveyed it on July 9, 1840:[6][7][8][9] The survey found that only two buildings—a log cabin near where Main Street intersects Ulysses Road[10][11][12][13]and one structure near which Park Avenue meets Independence Boulevard—remained standing within the boundaries then as defined by Mapes; all other square miles were covered with rolling prairies . . . [14],[15]. Of course this information comes from oral history recordings made shortly after Missouri's admission to the Union as a slave state on December 16th, 1820 – just prior to James Mapes' survey! It would appear that even though most residents had left for good by 1840,[16], some structures still stood untilable for settlement due to their antiquity (e.g., "the old sawmill"). This suggests that there may have been more than one structure extant at any given time due to factors such as historical attrition or decay rather than simply demolishing older architecture whenever possible[17].
In 1847, Webster Groves became a part of the Missouri Territory. On November 7, 1849, President James K. Polk signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened up new territory to settlement. The town of Webster Groves was chartered on December 3, 1850. In 1861, after the American Civil War began, Webster Groves joined Confederate forces and sided with the South. On April 12th of that year, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. As a result of this event, Webster Groves lost its status as an official town and it reverted back to being a rural community hosting many farmers and their families.
