Webster Groves is a small city in the Ozarks of southwestern Missouri. It is the seat of at least one county, and lies just north of the Arkansas River on the border of Pulaski and Boone counties. The population was 5,049 as of 2010. The town began to form around 1836 when General John H. Webster purchased land east of present-day Webster Groves from various Native American groups. He named his new settlement after himself, but it quickly became known as "Webster Grove." The first buildings were logs built by Webster's men during their forced migration from Illinois in 1837. Though founded as a slaveholding community, Webster Grove soon became an abolitionist stronghold due to its proximity to St. Louis and its close ties to abolitionists in general and Drayson Taylor specifically. In 1861, while Union forces were attacking Confederate positions near Corinth, Missouri, General John Custer ordered his troops to cross the Arkansas River into Missouri so they could attack that state's capital city, Jefferson City. As part of this operation, Custer's men burned down several homes in Webster Grove before halting their advance two miles south of where they now stand. This event is considered by many residents as one of the most famous moments in local history. Today, much like other small towns across America, Webster Groves has seen exponential growth over recent decades thanks to suburbanization and joblessness in nearby cities such as St Louis and Kansas City.[1] Despite this rapid pace-of-change, however, many people still consider themselves "the town" within which they live[2]. This sense of identity may be best illustrated through the annually held Memorial Day parade which features floats made entirely out of materials collected from local businesses throughout the week preceding Memorial Day (e.g., recycled aluminum cans). Webster Groves is a town in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Webster Groves were David and Lillie Chapman who arrived in 1836. They named their land "Webster Grove", after their father, Joseph Webster (1783-1859). Webster Grove was located on the east side of present-day Webster County and extended into Clay County to the west. The first post office at Webster Grove was established in 1839, and functioned until it was discontinued in 1846 due to lack of customers. In 1857, John Prentice founded a gristmill on the banks of the White River near where present-day Interstate 55 crosses it. Prentice's mill became one of the largest flour mills in America and produced high quality flour for local markets until it closed its doors in 1922. In 1865, Isaac Sears purchased property along I-55 south of town for $1 million; he built an experimental cotton gin there which became known as Sears' Cotton Plantation (now known as Olde Worlde gloves). The plant helped start a new era for St. Louis when cotton farming became more popular than tobacco farming throughout much of North America during this time period; Sears' plantations also supplied slaves with food and clothing during this period. In 1870, JB Hatton opened a grocery store at what is now downtown Webster Groves; Hatton's store served as a model for later grocery stores across America including Walmart and Sam's Club warehouses today. In 1886, George Ritchie founded Ritchie Bros., Ltd.; his company manufactured shoes here until 1955 when it merged with Schuh Brothers Incorporated to form Schuhska Corporation which still manufactures shoes inside Independence Mall today! In 1907 Drury & Company organized DRury Piano & Harpsichord Emporium from two saloons on Market Street that had been open since 1800! That same year saw another milestone when Kirtland Smith founded First National Bank - one of only three banking institutions operating within city limits at that time! On November 16th 1908 – 100 years ago this day – Kirtland Smith married Miss Emma Willard at Methodist Church in downtown Webster Groves! % After leaving school early to help support his family upon graduating from high school Varnum found work at Herter Wagon Workshops making wagons before starting his own business - Samuel Herter wagon works - started up by Varnum himself right next door to First National Bank just north on Gregory Avenue To commemorate these special moments we have put together some photos taken back then just like those times 100 years ago
