Webster Groves is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based city of Springfield. Webster Groves is named after James Webster who settled in this area in 1819. The community was founded by members of the Webster family in 1879. The original settlers were John and Abigail Webster, Jr., their six children, and their parents. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and started to grow crops and fish until they decided to move out of state in 1881 because of the bad economy back then. They moved to what is now Webster Groves when they got word that there would be land available for farming near Mount Hebron (now Hillcrest). When they arrived, there were no trees so they had to cut down some trees to start building their cabin. They also started trading goods with other farmers around here so they knew how things worked back then – which helped them build a good reputation for themselves over time even though they never set foot in Missouri again until 1925! In 1924, the Websters bought 2,000 acres (820 hectares) from Jens Jensen for $10 per acre – making them one of the largest landowners in St. Francois County at that time! Over time, more and more people came through here because it was a great place to raise cattle – giving birth both to local legend (like Doc Holliday) as well as national fame ( like Boone Pickens!). Today’s ranchers still use much of what James & AbigailWebster did back then! Since 1925, when James & Abigail Webb bought 2 million acres (880 hectares) of farmland hereabouts - all within easy reachof Springfield - life has been pretty much just gravy train; high prices for groceries ($1/pound locally), retirements averaging $3400/year + free healthcare these days (!), but mostly lots and lots of tourists drawn by all the historical landmarks associated with this little corner of Missouri! And if you get caught up too long sidewalk sprinting past those two general stores on State Route 66...well...it’s called “the squeeze” folks!
