Webster Groves, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1831 by Captain Samuel Webster and his family as a trading post on the east side of the Arkansas River. The first church in Webster Groves was built in 1836 on property donated by Captain Webster's wife. In 1865, General Joseph Hooker withdrew his army from Vicksburg and entered Cairo, Illinois; near Cairo he ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march north to drive out any Union forces remaining in that state. Lieutenant Colonel Amos J. Smith took command of a brigade under Forrest and led it into battle against Union troops under Brigadier General John Sweeny at Pea Ridge Summit on April 12, 1865. After being repulsed with heavy losses, Forrest withdrew his forces to Cairo; Lieutenant Colonel Smith continued the pursuit but was also defeated at Battle of Red Clay Road on April 15. Captain Samuel Webster purchased 320 acres (132 hectares) northeast of town from Major James Hargrave for $10 per acre in 1881. In 1893, WG Post Office opened with Mrs Fannie Gibbs as First Lady Manager./Apostle George Washington Carpenter opened WG Store #2 in 1896./Webster Groves School District #1 became effective November 1st 1897./Webster Groves Cemetery opened May 7th 1898
