Webster Groves is a small town in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first people to live here were the Stoops and their children who immigrated around 1820 from England. They named their village after Webster Parish in Massachusetts where they lived before coming to this country. Mr. and Mrs. Stoop built a log cabin on what is now Main Street about 1825-1826 and started a store there which was successful for many years. In 1852 they moved to what is now Webster Groves and continued to run the store until it burned down in 1886. The remaining stock of supplies and merchandise was sold at public auction after the fire and most of the money went back to England whence it came originally! The original courthouse in Webster Groves was built by Judge John Witherspoon (1793-1868) who presided over court proceedings here from 1827 until his death in 1868. He had been born in 1793 near Burlington, Vermont, but when he became circuit judge of states east of the Allegheny Mountains he removed with his family to this country and settled at Whatcom Rock on Valentine's Day, 1830 After two terms as justice of peace (1835-36), he was elected as first county judge (1837-41). He served two terms successively (until his death) before being elected as one term Ulysses S Grant's second Lieutenant Governor of Missouri (1847-48). A few years later he married Miss Emma Smith whose father also had land hereabouts; she gave birth to six sons - three are still living: James A., Heman C., and George Augustus Webb - all lawyers who have become well known within our community or outside it for their legal skills! One son died young while serving in World War I; that leaves five living brothers - four attorneys: Raymond Fenton Webb, Harry Franklin Webb Sr., Everett Burr Wexler, Willis Newton Wexler - all active within our community since its early days! Mrs.-Edwin Tait Rector currently presides over our Methodist church which traces its roots back even further than our current building! Our town post office began operations on November 25th 1865 under Captain Jepson & Company when Democrat Elijah Purdy took office as postmaster General following Abraham Lincoln's assassination; service continued until 1893 when it was discontinued because too much mail got lost along with other equipment during railroad construction!! Today we enjoy several excellent shopping areas including Webster City Centre located just off US Highway 24A just north of town center; Mercers Mart situated across from Consumers Drugstore on US Highway 24B about one mile west of town center; Harrah's Casino located just south of I-70 exit 171 about northeast of town center just beyond an old power Plant operated by Dow Chemical Company prior to deregulation/privatization some time ago making it an even more attractive gambling destination for visitors interested herein! Best known locally for its Chevrolet manufacturing activities currently based out side city limits although future plans call for plant expansion into interior residential neighborhoods adjacent highway exits 172nd Road et al.; additional manufacturing sites are planned or under development not included herein but expected eventually ceasing production once those expansions become available etc.?!!?!?!!!
