In 1822, John Fenton established a ferry service across the Kaskaskia River between present-day Springfield and Webster Groves for transportation purposes. In 1827, Jno Fenton married Sarah Lunsford and moved his family to the area he had been so instrumental in developing. In 1865, Captain Samuel Furman founded Furman's Ferry Company at what is now the intersection of US Highway 54 and MO Highway 431 in northeastern Webster Groves (now known as Furman Road). The company transported goods and passengers over the Kaskaskia River between Springfield and Webster Groves until it ceased operations in 1916 due to financial difficulties. In 1886, George Headrick began operating a flour mill on present-day First Street in Webster Groves; this mill continued operations until 1971. In 1907, Alexander Livingston built a large home at 1201 First Street which served as both his family's home and their business office until his death in 1965. In 1912–13, Wm Henson erected a large brick school building on Second Street near where current day MO Route 24 meets Interstate 70; this school remains standing today with additions made over time such as an addition for apartments in 1966 and another drive-through window added in 2006 From 1913 through 1978 there was also an airport located northeast of town just off I-70 exit 191B which served primarily military helicopters during World War II; however this airport has since closed down . There were also several other businesses that operated within or adjacent to town limits but these have all since vanished or are no longer considered active by locals . Overall it can be said that although not every aspect of life within town limits has continued unchanged throughout its history (e.g., grain elevator closure), most aspects have changed relatively little over time . Webster Groves is a census-designated place in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what would become Webster Groves were Flemings from Belgium who founded a small farm on the west side of town in 1836. They named it Prairie du Chien and continued to live there until 1840 when they moved to what is now known as Webster Grove. A school was built on this site in 1851 and Reverend John Hadden taught there for several years before moving to Ozark, Arkansas in 1855. In 1861, Drury Lane plantation was purchased by General David Dixon and his family and renamed Webster Grove after him - making it one of the few plantations name changed during the American Civil War era. One reason for this may have been that many soldiers coming home from service were based in or near Springfield, Missouri; such changes may not have been easily approved by Confederate General Joseph Estrada (who owned many plantations). The grove remained under Dixon's ownership until his death in 1865. In 1870, Mrs. Dixon sold her interest to her son Benjamin Dillard - ending all remaining Suptember Field properties within the boundaries of Webster Grove except for that located east of Highway 54 on present day North Avenue - thus creating the current township boundaries which encompass most of what is now known as north central Webster Grove east of Highway 54 and much of south centralWebsterGrove prior to its incorporation into St Francois County circa 1907 with only a tiny area located east off I-70 just outside modern day Kansa City proper
The Webster Groves neighborhood in Missouri was named for Samuel Webster, a U.S. Representative from the state of Massachusetts. The area that is now Webster Groves was first settled by families who arrived in the early 1800s. By 1820, the area had become a part of the city of Springfield. In 1825, Springfield merged with Quincy to form the new city of St. Louis. The land that is now Webster Groves was annexed to St. Louis in 1836 and became part of the newly formed town of Hazelton. When St. Louis was hit by an earthquake in 1906, parts of Hazelton including Webster Groves were destroyed and many residents lost their homes and businesses. After World War II, much development took place in the Webster Groves neighborhood as people began to move into the area for its fertile soil and strategic location near several hospitals and universities
