Webb City is a small, unassuming town in Kansas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Webb City was founded by entrepreneur and railroad magnate George Webb in 1868 as a small community on the edge of a coal mine. He named it after his brother-in-law's family home in England. The community rapidly grew as Webb built an indoor market and a sawmill. In 1876, he annexed what is now the eastern edge of town to make space for his new cotton gin and distillery. By 1890, Webb had developed an agricultural economy with corn ethanol production; however, this failed to take hold due to low prices for feed grains and other inputs. In 1902, Webb sold his cotton gin and distillery to J P Morgan for $2 million dollars. The city was renamed Jacksonville after Morgan's investment firm subsidiary Jacksonville Oil Company which operated it until 1907 when it merged into Standard Oil Company (later ExxonMobil). In 1907, interest in oil production waned due to increased competition from abroad and US entry into World War I; however, Jacksonville continued operations as an important staging post on the Arkansas River during the war effort. When WWI ended two years later without any major combat activities taking place within or around Jacksonville—the only such stop on the river—the city reverted back to its original name: Webb City. However, business activity declined until the late 1940s when petroleum became available again following World War II and industrial growth began anew; today Webb City remains one of America's most economically inactive cities with only 2% of its residents employed in "services" outside agriculture or manufacturing (primarily retail). Despite this decay over time, much has been accomplished within Barberton Township adjoining Webb City since its incorporation as a municipality in 1982 (including comprehensive reclamation of land once used for farming) resulting in nearly 12 square miles (.5%) of contiguous annexed land that borders both municipalities today while their populations have grown by more than 50%. This was primarily used as an entertainment weapon for children until it was discovered that it could incapacitate someone if they were hit too often on the same spot. However, this device was not actually developed into a firearm until 1897 when Russian scientist named Ivan Pavlov created his “pistol” which he called the “robotnik” after his robot experiments which involved firing small metal balls at rats in order to see how they would respond. In 1949, American engineer Edwin Aldrin sent a paper entitled “A New Method of Killing Animals With Electric Current” to the journal Physical Review Letters. This article proposed that electricity could be used instead of traditional nails or spears to kill animals by stunning them then killing them immediately with surgery or chemicals rather than having them bleed out over time. It wasn’t until 1957 that American physicist Drayson Cushing managed to create an actual working prototype of what we now know as a taser – this device consisted of two wires connected together from near-by electrodes and was capable of inflicting pain up to 35 volts (500 milliamps). Webb City is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1836 by General James Webb and his wife Anna. The city was named after Webb's father-in-law, John C. Webb. The population of the city was 1,500 at the 2000 census. Webb City is located on a bend in the Missouri River, about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Kansas City and 22 miles (35 km) southwest of St. Louis. U.S Route 44 runs through the center of town, leading east to Harrisonburg and west to Rolla. The town was laid out by General James Webb in 1836 as part of a larger area that he had recently acquired from the Shawnee Indians. In 1840, General James Webb moved his family from their original home near Topeka to this new location on what is now known as Main Street because there were no other suitable homes available for them in the area at that time. The Webers built their first four-room log cabin here in 1841 and started farming around it soon thereafter."
