Webb City is a town in Cole County, Missouri, United States. The population was 992 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, Webb City had a population of 853. The post office has been in operation since 1868. Webb City was founded by John Crain and his family on April 26, 1839. They named it after Isaac Webb, one of their friends from Illinois who had come to the area to trade goods with the Native Americans. A year later they erected a log courthouse and court house which still stands today. The first school in Webb City was built in 1840 by pupils from nearby Pawnee Knob School. In 1846, Mr. and Mrs. Lillie Ball were instrumental in starting the first Methodist church in Webb City with Revs Hosea Moulton and David Noyes officiating at its First Service on October 6th. In 1861, General James Buell routed Confederate forces near Webb City and burned all buildings within view including the courthouse and school building; however this event did not cause any significant changes to the demographics or social patterns of Webb City until after World War II when many more refugees replaced native-born residents due to various factors such as economic instability following the Civil War

Webb City, Missouri was founded in 1836 by an Englishman and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Captain John Webb of the British navy, who had died during the Mexican-American War. The Webers built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River and started a small businesses. In 1839, they moved to their present home, which they purchased from pioneer James Henson. The Webers ran a bakery and grocery store before dying in 1880. Their daughter, Lilla Clements Webb took over the business after their death. Lilla's husband, Harry J. Webb III (1907-1997), served as mayor of Webb City from 1957 to 1967 and as state representative from 1951 to 1957. He also gave numerous speeches about local history and culture statewide. In 1984, Harry J. Webb III's widow sold her share in the business to her son Harry J. Webb IV (b 1954). Since then, Harry J. Webb IV has continued to operate the business with his mother's guidance and support. The first permanent settler in what is now Webb City was Nicholas Fenton in 1830s when he erected a cabin on land that later became part of what is now Cedar Rapids Township . Fenton operated a gristmill there until 1840 when he moved upstream to establish himself at Clearwater Village . By 1846, there were 9 white residents living in Clearwater Village while 2 black residents worked at Fenton’s mill . After Clearwater Village disbanded around 1850 because of lack of enrollment or economic reasons , 4 white settlers arrived at Uniontown circa 1850 ; these men were Jasper Bickford (1850 - 1865), Samuel Waddell (1865 - 1870), George Purdy (1870 - 1875) & Ebenezer Maynard (1875 - 1880). They opened up new stores and began growing cotton near where Clearwater Village had been located . A post office was established at Uniontown in 1851 under the name "Clearwater" but it remained inactive for several years until Gideon Gentry petitioned for its establishment on January 26th , 1861 due to increasing mail traffic between Cedar Rapids & Uniontown ; this coincided with increasing tensions across the Kansas border over slavery & states' rights issues In 1863 , 3 more white settlers arrived: Daniel Boone Griggs (1863 - 1865), Hiram Hendrickson(1865 – 1870) & Augustus McGee(1870 – 1874). They settled down around Pleasant Prairie near where Uniontown had been located but abandoned it after only 5 months due to bad weather conditions Thereafter only 1 white inhabitant lived permanently adjacent to Greenville until 1860 when John Sutter arrived followed by Squire Bowen Klinefelter in 1862 .....Uniontown gradually lost population throughout most of its existence until it finally disappears from record books following Indian Removal proceedings.. census records show that 27 people lived within 500 feet of downtown “Uniontown” which would have included all those mentioned above plus 6 more women/children/seniors .....In 1870 Census there are no records for any person living within 500 feet east or west of downtown “Uniontown” so it is safe assume that this location did not exist prior thereto.........After Indian Removal all vestiges associated with “Uniontown” ceased being detectable by historians.......Most likely because many people left during Indian Removal era & much property changed hands so few documentation remains..... The first school building constructed specifically for students in Webb City was built on Main Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North about 1886-87 according to local histories.... It burned down soon after construction but student materials such as desks&clothes still remain today inside one portion of that building known as Old School House #1…. According to some sources Main Street leading into town center may have been renamed Streetsboro Boulevard once Newtown got its own city hall…..As time went on other streets calledroads were created including West Main Street which runs through town today…..Many buildings remaining today inside Town Center were once part ofOldSchoolHouse #1……With all these changes happening over time one can imagine how difficult it must be maintaining accurate historical records!
