In 1865 a post office called "Webb" was established for alluvial soil near Clearwater Creek which flows through town center; however it never took hold because no one wanted to live on an open watercourse with so many mosquitoes In 1881 a schoolhouse/church complex called "The Peoples School" was built on what is now Main Street between Elm and Maple Streets just west of downtown Webberville In 1902 local lumberman John Bogle donated land to be used as a city park that included parts of what are now Elmhurst Drive, Weber Avenue (now Elmhurst Boulevard), Haskell Avenue (now Haskell Road), North Main Street (now South Main Street), West Webster Avenue (now West Webster Boulevard) and East Webster Avenue This park served as an important civic center for Webb City until 1975 when it was sold to Jefferson County for development into apartments In 1916 a grocery store called "The Greasepot" opened at 309 N Broadway which became known as The Social Club after prohibition ended The Social Club closed its doors in 1955 but reopened under new ownership as The Webb Hotel before being turned into an apartment building again in 1978 In 1935 Mayor Harry Wirths organized Aldermen John Dolan and Clarence Wesselink into a city council which served until 1945 when they were replaced by Mayor Willis Hayson who served until his death in 1951
