Webb City was founded in 1866 by George Webb and his wife, Emma. The city has a long and rich history of optical components and accessories, which can be seen in the various businesses that have been located here. In 1865, George Webb started a business that manufactured telescopes. He used to sell them door-to-door. In 1876, he opened a store on Main Street in Webb City. His store sold both optical materials and telescope parts. It was one of the first commercial stores to sell optics products in Missouri. George Webb also started what is known as the “Webb-Goudey Glass Company” back in 1877. This company made glass lenses for telescopes and other optical devices. In 1896, they moved their operations to a new building on Third Street in Webb City. They continued making lenses until 1958 when they retired from business altogether due to economic reasons. The town of Webb City was originally named for General Ulysses S Grant (1821-1885). However, because it took so many years for him to get his name entered into the city register, it wasn’t until 1886 that the town got its current name: Webb City after George WEBB Sr., son of George WEBB Jr.. The original German settlers who founded this area didn’t call themselves “Webbians” but rather Germans living near St Louis called themselves “Hamburgers” or simply Hamburgers because they were related to that city in Germany (this is still true today). So when we say “Webb City” throughout this paper we are actually referring specifically to Hamburger Avenue which runs through downtown Webb Village!

Webb City, Missouri was home to the first optical store in the area back in 1892. It wasn't until 1915 that Webb City's first Optical Cooperative opened its doors, selling eyeglasses and other optical supplies. The store closed in 1978, but reopened in 1984 as a second-hand shop. In 1990, Webb City’s only restaurant opened and became known for its excellent food and wine selection. In 2002, the Webb City Chamber of Commerce established an annual laser show at the nearby Curtiss Municipal Airport to celebrate Webb City’s history and culture.
Webb City is located in the Ozarks region of Missouri, about 20 miles southeast of St. Louis. The city was founded in 1859 by a group of Methodist ministers, led by Rev. A.J. Webb, who named it for George Webb, one of their own parishioners. The population was 2,500 at the time of incorporation in 1872 and grew to 11,000 by 1900. Webb City is a small town with a limited number of businesses and residences. It has an active downtown scene which offers cultural attractions including the Webb Museum of Art and the Webb County Fairgrounds; and there are several amateur sports teams that play in local leagues. The city also contains a park system with three baseball diamonds, two football fields, three basketball courts, and two tennis courts; as well as a children’s playground, two libraries (one public and one private), four grocery stores (three full-time and one part-time), four barbershops/beauty salons (two full-time and two part-time), six restaurants (four full-time and four part-time), twelve shops (five full-time and eleven part-time), five post offices (three part-time), five banks (three full time and one half time), three health clubs/spas/massages (two full time and one half time) On top of all this activity there is also an extensive nightlife scene that includes bars/clubs open until 3 am or later on weekdays as well as theaters open late into the night on Saturdays or Sundays

Webb City is a small town in St. Joseph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Webb City was James Wetherbee and his family who arrived in 1837. They were followed by John Cramer, who settled in 1840. In 1845, Simeon Iverson purchased the land which now makes up Webb City from David J Roche and built the first store on Main Street. He also founded the first school in Webb City which was located on what is now called Third Street. At that time there were no roads or schools so students had to walk to school each day. By 1860, there were three stores and twelve homes in WebbCity In 1865, Isaac Hartsock built a house on what is now Elm Street which became known as "The Hartsocks House." In 1868-69 Phineas Seymour opened a grocery store on First Avenue near what is now Old Central High School which became known as "Seymour's Grocery." A post office was established at WebbCity in 1870 and remained open until it closed in 1907 because of lack of mail traffic In 1878-79 Blanchard & Company erected a frame millinery shop on North Second Street which became known as "The Gables". In 1886-87 Elisha Kline established an ice cream stand called "Kline's Creamery" on West Third Street which later merged with local rival Dairy Queen Inc.. Another early business owner was Drs Julius Pemberton (1858-1935) who operated a general hospital for patients from nearby Lawrenceville until his death 1 2 3 4
